It is a flashback of the songwriter on his childhood. He shows the characteristics of Southern cotton farmers as hardworking people who took not only their work, but their religion seriously when stating that the only day he ever saw his father stop working was on Sundays when they would go to church. As the songwriter looks back, he also states that as Southern cotton farmers they didn't face the troubles that most faced after the stock market crash of 1987 ("We didn't know that times were lean", "It didn't seem like things were all that bad").
