Death of a Hero Lyrics

I was in Pitsburg
When I saw Superman in the backroom
He was doing lines of something in the bathroom
I barely recognized him at all

I saw him doing
Things you shouldn't do with all that power
I wish someone would've thrown him in the...

I think that this song is about his dad, how we see our father as a "hero", is mainly how we as kids only see the good version of people until we grow up and actually see who they are.

When you are a child everything is two-dimensional you don't notice the darker aspects of people you admire and hold as role models. This song to me is seeing past the facade and innocent simple definition you place on many things. Growing up and finding out that those you held in such high esteem are not heroes but regular people and sometimes even villains.

In my opinion it's about someone you considered a hero only to find out he isn't the way you pictured. The cruel reality of life. That day he "saw through all the magic" which means he saw through all he thought of this hero and actually saw who he was on the inside, including his flaws. I believe that's the beauty of life. Even though he has flaws, you accept him and love him anyways. Although this wasn't conveyed in the song. Just my personal opinion

In my opinion it is about having an idol during our teenage years or when we were a child. I admit when I was a child I believed in things that are magical like fairies, Santa Claus, and even Superheroes, and Superman was one of my favorite. I was in awe of his super powers like flight and super strength, heat vision and a lot more. It could be any superhero but I guess Superman was the most popular especially during my childhood days. As a child we look at them in awe.

"That night I put my youth in a casket
And buried it inside of me."
But as we get older we realize that they are not real and that through experience no one has all that power because we witness that there are people with status who are really not that heroic, we start to question that. If only we are able to make life easier if we had that particular power. If only.

"That night I saw through all the magic
Now I'm a witness to the death of a hero."
There is that one point in our lives that we think about life hard and make the biggest decision of putting away childish ways and grow up. That we do not remain in this life as a child but we need to go through it to the next stage of adolescence to adulthood. So moving on and growing up means witnessing to the death of a hero or childish ways.

"I burned all the pictures in the attic
    And threw away the magazines
That night I saw through all the magic
And now I'm a witness to the death of a hero."
I remember when I gave away all my teenage magazines, gave away my Barbie dolls to a cousin much younger than I am, and changed my closet preferences. I used to have lots of teenage novels, Archie, Sabrina, and posters of Hollywood stars on my bedroom wall. I even had my walls painted differently.
It was not easy growing up. It was a big change for me. It did not happen overnight. But I had to. Slowly, I turned the page. And here comes a chapter after the next.

It's about someone he really looked up to letting him down. Someone he considered a hero until he saw him doing some bad things and realized that he wasn't as amazing as he thought. He saw through all the magic and the image of him as a hero died.

I believe it means he saw backstage to a Superman movie when he was young and figured out that he's not real and the verse "That night I saw through all the magic" meant he knew that it wasn't real and the person that played Superman was just acting and wasn't actually like that.
