Violin Lyrics

Lately I,
I've been heading for a breakdown
Every time I leave my house
Well it feels just like a shakedown
Between street sweepers and the pushers or the lawyers
Who may as well be butchers
Between the small timing hustlers who all, seem...

Only my heart understands the lyrics to this song. While my mouth can't find the words to say. I happy to be alive

He believes God is small and insignificant otherwise he would have " hiding out in that ole double bass". Much bigger instrument. See it all makes sense now.

he said "it's a song about writing songs" I think our answer- God in the violin- is in the last place we may look. Somewhere small that WE have to go look not wait around for God to come to us.

I believe this song is about him being a drug addict and he is reaching out for help

I believe that Amos Lee is saying that there are so many horrible things going on in life, so where is this God that everyone refers to as a savior and holy? He is saying, "God, where have you been when the world needs your help?"

I think we need to look deeper into the meaning of this song as painful as it. If we look through history about the violin it has been known as the devils instrument and I believe that is why Amos chose it for this song. I believe he is at the crossroads choosing between god and the devil. The music that he hears from that violin is so beautiful he confuses it for god in fact it has been the cause of all his sorrow. All the fame and fortune that comes with selling your soul such as the pushers selling you dope and the lawyers suing you for record contracts that you made. The big fish is a symbol of jesus and the ambition is the devil and he is stuck between both.

In short, heres a man who is tired of all the negativity that surrounded him and in his own personal life. And since it is popular believe that God represents all that is good, so he calls on to Him for some comfort. The lyrics, the music and of course Amos himself is a perfect union. Eeriely beautiful.

I believe Amos wrote these lyrics on a more personal level, with a deeper meaning than just what the words say. I believe that he was probably going through a tough time in his life when he wrote it, evoking the deep, burdened feeling that lies beneath the words. Maybe in his tough times, he just wanted to know where God was for him. Maybe he just felt alone and felt like God was hiding out in his words in his music rather than be there for him like he wanted him to be. But with a Biblical reference, God turns away from evil. Being surrounded by a world full of evil, maybe Amos just felt like he needed God and he could only have him when he played his music. His music is his escape from the world. He wants the world to be a better place, and God will be more abundant in the world as a better place ???? I don't know, just my connection to it. I love the song and I listen to it just about everyday because it evokes so much feeling.

God is in the music. As he listens to the violin he is aware of the beauty of God's presence but he wants to experience God more in his life's tough circumstances.

Need to know what the violin represents. The rest of the lyrics hinge on this. The protagonist is sick of the world he sees around him/her. Tired of the efforts he has put into chasing what may turn out to be hollow dreams. Thus in the chorus he asks why is God "hanging out in that ol violin", please come rescue me from this. It's a prayer for help. But what is the violin? Is it music for the musician, something more personal to Mr. Lee? Is it something each of us go to to seek solace?

    Lately I,
I've been heading for a breakdown
Every time I leave my house
Well it feels just like a shakedown (people put their hands/needs/expectations on you.)
Between street sweepers and the pushers or the lawyers
Who may as well be butchers(cut at you, taking what they need)
Between the small timing hustlers who all, seem to feed upon each other

    [Chorus]
    Oh God why you been
    Hanging out that ol' violin
While I've been waiting for you,
    to pull me through

    Lately I,
every time I try to lie down
While my mind just gets away
I can't even close my eyes now(over whelming me until sleep will not come)
Between the big fish ambition, and the lovers
Using words as ammunition(motivation...for their needs)
Between the wood planks I've been pacing and this impossible dream that I've been chasing

    Chorus]
    Oh God why you been
Hanging out in that ol' violin
While I've been waiting for you,
    to pull me through

    Chorus]
    Oh God
    Oh God
    Oh God why you been
Hanging out in that ol' violin
While I've been waiting for you,
    to pull me through

    Oh God
    Oh God
    Oh God
