Well like any great Beatle's song this can have multiple meanings. To me it appears it is about a guy who has lost his girlfriend over something foolish. Although on the surface he may appear to be okay with the break up, he states "I laugh and act like a clown beneath this mask I am wearing a frown." He has too much pride to show his true sad feelings over his loss.
