No Reply Lyrics

This happened once before
When I came to your door
No reply
They said it wasn't you
But I saw you peep through your window

I saw the lie, I saw the lie
I know that you saw me
As I looked up to see your face

I tried to telephone
They...

I have always felt that this is not Lennon singing about a girlfriend, but about his beloved mother, Julia. Since John did not live with his mom but having her own place nearby, I'm sure he would stop by unannounced and was witness to her having a gentleman friend over...this would probably stir a jealousy worse than a boyfriend girlfriend relationship. Lennon has talked of laying on Julia's bed while she was napping and wondering what she would do if he made love to her.....she was more like a friend to him than a mother.

there are many ideas a man can think but if he thinks it twice he thought about another idea which makes his idea nonsense...

Also, this guy's a stalker!: He sees her "with another man",(not a boy, these are adults), yet he doesn't confront them: He's hiding in the bushes, or something similar. Why? Because they've broken up, & he has no right to confront them.

A fascinating turn of a phrase: The bulk of the lyrics seem to put the blame on the girl: She won't answers calls, her family lies about her not being home, she's been seen with some other guy...BUT THEN, the bridge: A confusing maze of "I"s, some of the "I"s meaning the boy, others meaning the girl. "If I were you I'd realize that I..."??? "and I'd forgive the lies that I..." ??? If you dont listen closely, it sounds like more of those lies that the girl told in the verse, BUT NO, it's the GUY who's asking for forgiveness for HIS lies, which have recieved "no reply". Besides this being extremely clever, it's also an accurate rendering of the roundabout way guys ask girls for forgivness, while still trying to sound like it isn't their fault.

Up until this point, most of John's songs were collaborations with Paul, and they did not tell a complete story. This song was a great artistic moment for John.

It is saying that John saw his girl with another man therefor she is cheating on John. When he tried to talk to her, she gave him no reply.
