#1 top rated interpretation:I dont think this song is very agnostic at all. I think it raises one question to God, and one frustration with very convinced believers. The question to God is why God allows all the terrible things that happen in our world. And it is expressing frustration towards believers who is convinced that almost every good thing that happens is miracle. For example if a man gives a starving man a piece of bread they call that a miracle, when its realy just an act of goodness. It isnt as simple as to say that you are either working for God or Satan. Many people are in between and are struggling with the topic and when super strong belivers proclaim thing as a mirracle or a work of satan that only pushes them away. Life isnt a dance on roses. I believe there is a meaning with everything that happens, but soetimes that meaning can be very hard to see at the moment or ever!

'I slap the water and watch the fish dance to the ripples of us' is one of the most beautiful song lyrics I have ever heard in my entire life. I plan to get these lyrics tattooed on me becuase not only does it seem that this song is about the equal balance of good and bad in this life, but it also shows that not everyone can be happy all the time and as humans, we must suffer to succeed. Simon neil can believe whatever her likes as far as I'm concerned, everyone has their own views yet he's wanting to discover the further life beyond death and the life we live in with a lack of perfection now. 'This aint a miracle' is telling you that the life he leads now might not be doing it for him but he thinks there might be better, and for all we know there is a higher power out there somewhere and he's seeking it.

This song to me has a different interpretation.
God and Satan are metaphors for good things and bad things, and the song itself is about a relationship that can't find a balance.

The singer wants to find true love but is cynical such a thing exists so has contented himself with being in an unhappy relationship and deluded himself that it is true love. Love is something everyone craves and supposed to be the ultimate form of happiness. He finds himself questioning it because he is like well hell if this is supposed to be the best thing ever...why am I not happy?
He wants a miracle to happen and to feel the old flame again that brought them together and feel the good things, however when he trys to rekindle the flame she shuns him. "Well I look up to God
But I see trouble Cause this ain't a miracle" he knows himself the relationship is doomed.

Ruin your life" this is so self explanatory its not worth trying to interpret.

this too is obvious... the see saw is the balance they have between good and bad in the relationship, so he is saying when we cant find middle ground , when i end up hurting you! dont bother acting like we didnt know this was coming...becuase i will just feel guilty remembering how good you were and miss you and forget the bad and think what we had was love and convince myself we should have another shot at the relationship and love and we will just go in a circle so I guess this is love

To the ripples of us" this to me symbolised how other people watch their relationship with envy and crave what they have and have fun gossiping when things are stirred up

but esentially they are both just at a standstill in their relationship, neither happy just wondering if they are meant to be , (rust happens with water, maby this symbolises the tears they shed over this relationship are destroying them from the inside slowly)
In the end he decides this isn't love or a miracle how could it be when they are both so miserable .... -

A major inspiration for the lyrical content of Only Revolutions was frontman and lyricist Simon Neil's marital experiences and his obsession with a love story by American author Mark Danielewski. He explained to Clash magazine: "I got married last year so a lot of the lyrics are about me and my wife. It's kind of a relationship record in that sense and a record about life. The track 'God And Satan' for instance questions what's there for us when we die. Everyone has lost someone close to them and whenever that happens you do start to question your own existence and you do start to think maybe there is no grand picture after all. But while we're here, we might as well try and make people happy and make ourselves happy. It sounds defeatist but I'm almost happy that there is no happy ending. As far as I'm concerned your happy ending is happening right now."

I think it's about being agnostic. He's frustrated because he is certain that there is something somewhere, but he can't find it. God and Satan could be there, but they aren't doing what is expected by his standards, so he is unhappy with his life because he doesn't see a point in it. On the other side, I see a bit of atheism in it. When he says "this ain't a miracle", it sounds like he's given up on them.

when I look beyond the shell of my belief i find that the events of my life is being controlled by both God and Satin, and i am just playing the part of a puppet. there exists a constant tug of war between the good and bad, controlled by God and Satin. and now when i know this truth, i am indifferent to both miracles and miseries.
