I believe it stands for what you believe in
(especially when it comes to animal and human rights), and not conform to outdated and barbaric "traditions" nor ideological dogma from the Dark Ages. Just like Bernie Sanders, Bob Marley's song is encouraging people to "think outside the box" and not fall in line and walk lock-step to the status quo. Overall, the song is about non-conformity, individuality, freedom, and the rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, the right to be yourself and not to be molded into something and/or somebody you choose not to be, nor to be expected to conform to what everybody else does.

Bob Marley's message is to fight for what you believe is right, granted religion or not.

I personally think that it means to stand up for what you believe is right. And to block out the haters. For example in some parts in the US people are against same sex marriage. Which are known as the Gay Rights Movement. Anyways most people are against that idea because they may bring religion into it. Its ok to think that, but they should be considerate about other peoples thoughts on that. So therefore I think that the song means to stand up for what you believe in and to not care about what people say.

To keep fighting in life and not to give up your human rights because we all deserve them and need them to feel better.
