Beyond the Sea Lyrics

Somewhere beyond the sea
somewhere waiting for me
my lover stands on golden sands
and watches the ships that go sailin

Somewhere beyond the sea
she's there watching for me
If I could fly like birds on high
then straight to her arms
I'd...

It was written during WW2 for all the soldiers dreaming of their girls back home.

I agree with the comment about this song being about a couple separated by death. The lines about them reuniting "beyond the moon," "beyond the stars" seems, to me, to suggest that she's in heaven and that he will be there with her soon ("the sea" isn't literally the sea, but rather their separation; "sailing" isn't sailing, but living). Of course, this song works with a literal interpretation, as well.

For many reasons, this was 'our song' during our two years together. Tragically, however, in 2006, we were engaged in the January, married in the July & I was widowed in September, losing my husband to cancer aged just 29. This song epitomises everything about our separation by death & I visualise his spiritual life & our eventual reunion through the lyrics. Whatever the origin of the lyrics, it feels as though they were written for us.

Beautiful song. My son worked on Finding Nemo at Disney and specifically asked that this be played at his Final Celebration as a way to honor and comfort his cast and crew members - saying "sail on - we will meet beyond the sea!". It has brought me much comfort as I hear and think of seeing him again when my ship sails there too. Happy and comforting.

The Bible teaches about a sea beyond the solar system that leads to God's throne. Genesis 1:6-19, Psalm 148:4 and Revelation 4:6. This may indicate the song speaking of the separation of death.

I think that it is about the one you love dying and you will meet again and the one left will be living in this world no more, but will meet that person again to be reunited forever more.

I hear this different. This feels like a man who spent his time as a womanizer knowing the right one is out there for him and when he finds her, he will set sail no more.

It’s about the Ancient Greek King Cyex and his wife Queen Halcyon. He goes off to war in a ship - she pines for him standing in the waves and prays to be with him again. He dies at sea but then the goddess takes pity on her and they both turn into kingfishers and reunite.

I think it’s about a Man and woman that were together. Then he left to go be with another woman or other women and realize that he really loved her and she’s going to take him back and then he will no longer go sailing

This interpretation has been marked as poor. view anyway

No, its not that deep. He's a sailor away from home and she's on land on the other side of the world. Its not about death; its about living.

I think that he's singing about his lost love, who's 'beyond the sea', or dead. He talks about 'sitting, just as before' and how happy they will be, once they're together. Instead of being sad at the loss of his lover maybe he's trying to make her feel better. (I'm more going for the interpretation as seen in the X-files. When Scullys dad dies and he asks this song to be played at his funeral.) I don't know. I think either as a sailor or whatever is a good interpretation. Mine is a little grim... but it's still a lovely song

He's a sailor out at sea n he's saying that he knows 'beyond a doubt' that at some shore somewhere, his love is waiting for him and that when they meet he'll stop sailing! Very nice song. Was ending theme for 'Finding Nemo'
