Christopher Cross: Charm the Snake Meaning

   I read an article online about how this song has to do with race car driving, but I don't know anything about that. To me this song is about the endeavor guys have to go through to start talking to women.
   
   The first verse talks about acting "smart" and "cool", in a sense trying to be charismatic. On line though that seems particularly interesting is "When your breakin' the rules". It seems to imply that, when first talking to a girl, you need to take chances and say things you might not usually feel comfortable with in order to impress them. Or at least to create a relationship of possible romance between the two people.
   
   The second verse is much the same as the first. The lines "I think it might just help/
   To be a little bit sick" have the same meaning as before. If your just a nice guy, then girls wont necessarily see you as a possible interest.
   
   The third verse says that not all guys are "good lookin'". The idea is that for people who aren't traditionally attractive play an even more difficult game when trying to "charm that snake"
   
   The fifth verse describes the snake instead of the guy. It mentions the dangers of the snake, such as their venom. The snake can take advantage of you. This would be how, after being successful with a girl, men need to keep on their feet. All the troubles in trying to woo women don't end right after the first date. The line "But the meat is clean" implies that, despite the danger, it is still worth engaging with women. All of these sentiments continue in verse six. The snake can get a grip on your heart and "rip it apart".
   
   I could go on, but I think I've decently explained as to why I see this song the way I see it. It isn't a negative message. It reminds me of encouraging a nervous friend to get himself out in the dating world and start approaching women. Like the song says, you just need to "charm that snake".
