He is telling the girl that he cannot change... He has grown accustomed to having her as an option in his life. He fears (and warns) that he won't ever commit fully to her, so she should leave him. However, she cannot count on him to let her leave. Both are trapped. I agree with the first one too though about him loving the chaos in the whole thing. Either way she cannot count on him.

Actually Adam talks about this song on the counting crows youtube site, and that is what you would think it is about, but he is actually singing about contradictions. The guy he is singing about is sad and unhappy with himself, but at the same time finds beauty in the sad things, but unfortunately sad things are still sad so its a trap.. they still hurt. He is signing about how he keeps hurting people, but cant seem to stop, so he is telling her to leave, kind of a save yourself sort of thing.hes like addicted to hurting her or something. not physically by the way

He has this girl who wants to leave, and he's trying to tell her if you have to go, don't count on me to be here to pick up the pieces when you fall...basically. If you want more specific, you have to choose a line you don't understand or something.
