#1 top rated interpretation:I personally believe this song is about a broken woman struggling through depression,anxiety,etc. without anyone to help her. "She's been locked up inside her apartment a hundred days" showing she's alone, locked up in her own thoughts. I believe the "Superman" is just any person, someone she's hoping would save her. She's constantly telling herself they'll be there soon, not realizing they will never be there soon enough. She smiles, hiding her pain. In her depression and anxiety she does things to try to ease the pain "talking to angels" possibly representing drugs or her closeness to death, "counting the stars" represents everyday things that seem like monumentous tasks to her, "making a wish on a passing car" representing her wish to die to be free, "dancing with strangers" partying /going to the club to try to ease her mind and "falling apart" showing how when the high is gone or the tasks are done or the party is over everything reverts back to the way it was and she breaks even more. She's constantly hoping for some sort of savior to help her break free. The feeling of the song gets more and more desperate as it goes on. Showing how everything seems so much worse than before. At the very end the song calms down again, representing her death. The "and she smiles" at the end shows how she's finally gotten what she wanted, to be freed.

She keeps telling herself he's coming and that he's just late. She counts her wishes. She won't give up that he is coming to rescue her from herself. She looking for answers but can find them and and she knows he has them. She won't let people know she feels this way. She dancing with strangers, she keeping everyone around her happy while she herself isn't. She has faith in superman that he'll come for her and she awaits that day he does.

She doesn't want to fool around with other guys; she wants a serious, happy relationship. Sometimes she falls apart and "dances with strangers", but for the most part she's strong. She wants true love - she wants a ONE AND ONLY. She waits for him patient ily, knowing he'll come along. She knows he'll be worth it.
when I'm sad, I think it's about someone who is suicidal after they lost someone really close, their "superman". She keeps waiting for him to come back and to make silly excuses as to why he's not there. "He's at the laundry mat... He's at the give and dime." When he doesn't come back, "she starts talking to angles." AKA becoming suicidal. She wants to see him - she smiles at the thought of being with him in whatever life is after this world. The "Oh, at the speed of light" line at the end means she needs help - fast. Sometimes she dies in my imagination - and smiles before her death, thinking of seeing her superman. I personally think this is a story literally about Lois Lane and from Clark Kent's POV of her. Clark knows that Lois loves Superman.
I also think it goes in depth about Lois' day to day life as a journalist and how she tries to find answers in a town she doesn't feel fully connected too, until Superman can save her from her mundane moments.
The very end is almost like Clark getting up the courage of trying to tell her that he is Superman.

“Yeah he’s still comin’ just a little bit late. He got stuck up the five and dime saving the day” Means, the man she’s waiting for is soon to arrived but still stuck or haven’t find his way to her yet or still stuck up in a relationship with other woman who he isn’t going to end up with.
Literally the song and lyrics is screaming the right person to please hurry up already because your soulmate who is really destined to you is waiting for you arrived into her life.

PERSONALLY, i feel like the song is about a guy who is talking about the girl he loves, who happens to be in a toxic relationship with another guy. lyrics like “he’s coming just a little bit late.” “he was stuck at the laundry mat washing his cape.” and “he was at the 5 and dime saving the day.” are excuses shes making up for him to try and make herself feel better as to why he isn’t there for her, physically and emotionally. the whole “waiting for superman” line could either mean she’s waiting for someone new to sweep her off her feet so she can leave this guy, OR she sees this guy as superman but she’s waiting for him to change. and as to why i think the guy is singing about the girl he loves is because of all the pretty things he says about her, like “and she smiles, oh the way she smiles.”, “she’s talking to angels, counting the stars, making a wish on a passing car, she’s dancing with strangers, falling apart, waiting for superman to pick her up.”, meaning he sees how this toxic relationship is tearing her apart but she still manages to be amazing in his eyes.

I’m a 911 dispatcher. I was nearly always late coming home. Always working strange long hours. Never home. While I was out saving the day, being “Superman” to so many people throughout my day, my love was home waiting on me to be her “Superman”. She was always talking to angels, praying, making a wish on a shooting star, hoping, making excuses for me not being there, I was out saving the day. She found herself dancing with strangers, still hoping I’d be there. And in the end...I saved the day a thousand times for a thousand strangers... but this “Superman” never made it home on time to save our relationship.

My interpretation doesn't have to do with a romance, it has to do with a father-daughter relationship. The girl is waiting for her father to "Lift her up" and help guide her through the way of life. She's trying to come up with excuses for her father because she wants to believe that he's still going to come back for her.

I think it is about a woman who fell in love with a man so completely and believed he felt the same. She would wait for him to pick her up and make excuses why he hasn't shown up rather than face the truth he wasn't coming and she wanted him more.

Ok, this is my personal interpretation: Maybe this girl is a weird, little bit eccentric, but always wonderful woman who is living life to the fullest. She talks to angels, counts the limitless stars, makes wishes on passing cars... and waits for Superman to pick her up. She believes that she is special and worth something, so much so that Superman himself would come for her. I think she had a troubled childhood, and sometimes still gets a little confused, but still has so much hope and light. This is just how I see it.

I think it's about a single girl that has been through a lot in her life and she's afraid of being alone. Everyone asks when she's going to catch a man, so she tells him he's just delayed, but on his way. She's tired of facing the world on her own, so she's wishing on stars and passing cars that her Superman will find her.

I think it might be Daughtry's wife waiting for him to come home. He is supposed to be superman and come and save the day. But instead she has to keep on hoping and be patient until he can arrive. Her friends and family tell her to stop hoping in this broken home, but she only knows she has to wait for him and believe in him. She feels like she is crazy and he is tormented by their situation.
