The song is about the hopes and dreams we all have regardless of our means. Some may be lucky enough to buy experiences on a whim. The man in the song can't do this and he knows it. He also knows that so long as he works hard, keeps his head down, and works with pride regardless, his day will come. So he spends 50 years putting food on the table, keeping a roof over his head and saving when and where he can rather than fritter money on wasteful luxuries. Upon his retirement he now has the freedom and funds to see his dream become reality, and this was earned through a lifes hard work and toil. This makes it all the more special and appreciated.

known this song for sometime, and found it easy to understand,as it reflects quite well to my Dad,and my childhood on seeing him go day in day out Working for the council shifting the rubbish from the uncaring streets(rich and Poor) of a northern english city, you name it he handled it From needles to Sh't.
The pain would be etched on his face,he never said anything, but we saw it,at school we were bullied and laughed at.
But he never boozed, paid his biils,we had a good christmas every year, and he paid the house of fast,we left home to pursue our lives.
then the year came for him and mum to ditch that job and move to the coast, that was his dream.
He died During Christmas 2016 by cruel fate,i was there till his end.
One thing he never lost was Dignity .
