Death Cab For Cutie: Grapevine Fires Meaning
Song Released: 2009
Grapevine Fires Lyrics
And the grapevine seemed left for dead
And the northern sky looked like the end of days
The end of days
And a wake-up call to a rented room
Sounded like an alarm of impending doom
To warn us it's...

If you watch a 2011 interview with Ben Gibbard and Nick Harmer, Gibbard actually talks about what he wrote this song about. It was actually a picture painted from a memory of a time he visited a graveyard in Los Angeles.

This song is probably about a man and his lover (We), and well as one of his friend's daughters. The story starts with him feeling "impending doom" or a foreshadowing that things aren't going to go his way. He then continues by picking up his friend's daughter, and going to a graveyard. This is probably do to him seeing the rising smoke, which is a result of a brushfire. As the smoke starts getting thicker, he eventually comes to the terms of acceptance towards everything burning away. This might also be a parallel to all his work/hopes getting destroyed/ruined. We can see this through how the man doesn't seem to be that well off (Ex: "paper cups," "rented room")
