This ISN"T an anti-war song.
It is an accurate and very emotional rendering of what happens in war.
No judgement, as war IS sometimes necessary.
When evil raises it's head (Fascism, Communism, dictators who would kill and maim) MEN have to go forth and die.
They maim and are maimed, they kill and die.
The alternative is a suffering far worse than that brought by war.
Just try to imagine what would have happened if the free nations of the world had acquiesced to Adolf Hitler and allowed the Nazis to conquer Europe the UK, Africa, Russia and finally the US.
Are Hitler, Stalin or Pol Pot the kinds of people YOU would want running your country?
How would YOU stop them? -
For me this song is about a young man going to war then dying young on the battlefield along with his entire company. The place he died became his grave that soon became covered by flowers later in time
