I " believe" it's the romance of climbing Mt Everest. ( there is a book with the, slightly different verse ) of a rope for us to hold feels like broken glass along the road but I've come so far... In the DD video they show sextants for navigation, talk about fiery demons ( it's claimed that your skin burns from frost bite ) also talking about seeing and hearing thru the snow and " being easy as a nuclear war" would relate to nuclear winter, no food, no water ( all frozen) also their soldier uniforms I feel were to represent ( back in the day) that the ( french legion?) Would stop you from attempting a climb. Just my input.
