Eels: Novocaine for the Soul Meaning
Song Released: 1997
Novocaine for the Soul Lyrics
-
I remember where I was (Turning out of a T Junction in Chiselhurst SE London UK) when this song first burst from the radio, and my life was never the same again.
I was in a period, at my lowest and in a long tunnel (ten years) of 24/7/365 work for my kids, with no possibility of remission ever in sight, or human love. (Which one day changed).
The view of one beautiful sunset would keep me going for three months!
This song just caught the intensity and desperation of the raw pain of existence and immediately healed everything, put the experience in perspective and gave me peace by allowing me to look into the soul of the singer and realise that I was not alone.
Life is hard, and so am I you’d better give me something so I won’t die.
Novocaine for the Soul
You better give me something, to fill the hole.
Before I sputter out.
Before I sputter out.
Novocaine being a local anaesthetic
Utterly beautiful and evocative.
I am trying to sing this, but still am trying to find the right technique.
Rags to rags is another similar song,
perhaps slightly demented with pain
But again very evocative.
