Sometimes songs simply come through people. They get a line or two and start to write and then the song takes over and seems to come through all on it's own. Possible neither Bernie or Elton know what it means but it works and that's all anyone really needs to know.

Amazing song, I guess it comes from a disappointment view or an emotional exhaustion. He says he doesn't believes in miracles anymore, that means he did it in the past, so now when he sees the reality he begins to doubt about everything he did and believed. I think there's sarcasm in some lines, he says everything he wrote and all the tears actually doesn't mean that much to him, but then think about the line: "When I said that I don't care it really means my engine's breaking down"; so when he says: "Never meant that much to me", in fact he is confessing the opposite.
