Evanescence: Farther Away Meaning

Album cover for Farther Away album cover

Farther Away Lyrics

I took their smiles and I made them mine.
I sold my soul just to hide the light.
And now I see what I really am,
A thief a whore, and a liar.
I run to you,
(And run away from this hell)
Call out your name,
(Giving up, giving in)
I see...

She’s addicted to drugs… read the lyrics and think about her being addicted to heroine.

My interpretation is that the woman in the song is in love with an unavailable man, and she seduces him (I took their smiles and I made them mine), but doesn't act on it. Neither of them do. She pines after him, near him in physical proximity, but unable to really "be" with him, and he pulls away in order to stay faithful to his current relationship (farther away). She realizes she the wrong in her thoughts, lying to herself and others of her feelings, wishing to steal the object of her affection from the people in his life, and a whore, an a adulteress. Although she hasn't acted on anything, she still feels guilty of the thoughts she's having.

To me it is about someone being taken from a friend or significant other. This song means a lot to me and I'm dealing with it right now. The person that I think of when I hear this song is my good friend and crush.

I have a different interpretation than most people about this song. To me, it is about a physically/emotionally abusive relationship, but the person in the song can't summon up the courage to leave. Every day it seems to get worse which is why the person feels they are drifting away from their significant other. At the final verse (try to forget you/but without you, etc.) I believe the person left the relationship, and the last chorus is reminiscing

A girl had a boyfriend, and he left her, and she doesn't understand why, but he made her feel really bad about herself, and now she thinks that everyone else thinks about her that way, too. "A thief, a whore, and a liar."

To me it describes exactly what i'm living with a guy. She is so desperately in love with him. When listen to her talk, saying her life, her past ( she "run's to him", he's her confident ), he is making her realise that she is such a bad person ( a thief, a whore and a liar ). Who she is isn't pleasing him and makes him go father away every time she tell him what toubles her. Obviously, because her love for him isn't given back, she tries to forget about him. But forgetting the one you love is hard. And forgetting that the one you love hates some things in you is even harder. She sees him leaving and she tries to live with it but it so painful she can't breath. So, to me, it's really a love song about a guy that hates things that make you who you are. It's my current love situation... It's the best song EVER !!!!!

What do you think of it ?

I think this song is about needing someone to feel something. You don't feel anything unless they are with you. These lyrics prove that: "Try to forget you but without you, I feel nothing. Don't leave me here by myself, I can't breathe."

I thought it was about how she loves a guy but he only went out with her to get another girl... So he left her and went after the other girl.

I think this song is about how Amy (or the girl in the song) has realised what a terrible person she is for the bad things she's done and how she is a "thief, a whore and a liar". She loves this man but he ignores her and she would try to change for him, but each time she reaches out to him, he's "farther away". So she tries to forget about him but she realises she can't live without him ("I can't breathe").

I believe it is a song relative to her belief in god, and all that she's become in the song brings her father and farther from god each time she looks back to see him.

I think it's about how she knows she's been doing some wrongs in her life

"I took their smiles and I made them mine
i sold my soul just to hide the light
and now I see what I really am
    a theif a whore and a liar"

and how she's coming to this guy she loves, but he doesn't love her back because of all she's done. And everytime she does something wrong, he moves "farther away" from her.
