#1 top rated interpretation:This song is about how her sister died when Amy was 6 and her sister was 3 she was first told that her sister had passed on while she was in the school yard this is shown in the first line ‘playground school bell rings again’ I think this song shows how when you are 6 you don’t quite understand what is going on and she didn’t quite believe what was happening ‘soon I know I’ll wake from this dream’ this song is basically how she coped with losing her sister at such a young age
I would also like to point out that on the open door there is a song called like you and I believe that song to also be about her sister and how much Amy misses her ‘I long to be like you, sis, lie cold in the ground like you dear, there's room inside for two, and I'm not grieving for you, and as we lay in silent bliss, I know you remember me’ I don’t think this is so much that she wants to die but that she wishes she could be with her sister.
Both these songs were written completely by Amy Lee when most evanescence songs are not just written by Amy. She put her soul into the song. -

#2 top rated interpretation:I agree with everyone who says this song is a dedication to her sister, but I've always looked at this song as if it were through the eyes and mind a young teen who was dying from suicide and now, moments before his/her death is having some final thoughts and reactions to the world around them.

These first lines in the song are what tell me the age of this person, "school bell" we know they're of schooling age, (I just place this person as a teen because I can't imagine a younger middle school or elementary aged person doing this) and "Rain clouds come to play again" indicates some sort of inner feeling every time that school bell rings; a dark "rain cloud" over your head feeling.
"Has no one told you she's not breathing?"
That’s a paramedic telling the parent of this dying person the situation.
"Hello I am your mind giving you someone to talk to"
Then the dying's mind comes in once they've heard the paramedics comments (a.k.a this dying person is thinking to themselves in a surreal state.) The dying person lies unable to move and screams "Hello†in an attempt to speak to this other world going on around them.

Soon I know I'll wake from this dream"
The dying person now thinks this is all just a horrible dream they can't wake up from, so they figure they'll wait it out until it’s over.
"Don't try to fix me, I'm not broken"
This is the dying person telling paramedics, trying desperately to revive him/her, that they are not broken because to this dying person there is no concept in their mind that this is reality.
"Hello I'm the lie living for you so you can hide
Don't cry"
This is his/her third person almost reminding them of their decision to kill themselves, and that now they don't need to "lie" to themselves anymore so they can "hide" from this world they're leaving.
"Suddenly I know I'm not sleeping"
Dying person realizing this is no dream...
"Hello I'm still here"
Again, this dying person screams one more time to get the attention of those around him/her. (The vocals at this part especially, indicate the struggle from within this person)
"All that's left of yesterday"
'Yesterday' he/she was a living being and now their body is all that remains...

people tell me this is about Amy Lee's sister, but it feels more like a dying person.
i imagine she is just laying down, and people are huddled around her.
one asks if she is gone, and the other one says: "Has no one told you she's not breathing?"
this makes the person confused.

I thought that the song was about psychopath that it meant people who suffered fro depression or any other issue for example or about a person who suffers a pain like losing his gf or bf and he is still hurt but not like before because of the last part but now I understood the real meaning and it's too much sad.

I know that this song is about Amy Lee’s sister dying, but I’d like to offer my own personal interpretation I’ve developed. The reason this song has provided me solace from my struggles over the years.
When I listen to this song, it evokes similar feelings as Imaginary (another song on the album Fallen). The singer is in a situation they don’t want to be in and are trying to escape. Their mind being their only friend. “Hello, I am your mind giving you someone to talk to.” Their mind also helps them put up a front to hide how they are really feeling. “Hello, I’m the lie living for you so you can hide. Don’t cry.” -
This song is like a dialogue between the person and her inner voice (also a separate character she made for herself to console her brokenness).She is conflicted.
"playground school bell rings again, rainclouds come to play again" - she's in a state of pain and misery, the memory brings her back to that day again. It kept repeated.
"has no one told you she's not breathing, hello im your mind giving you someone to talk to hello" - She didnt know how to exactly deal with her loss, she make believe that there is another person telling her that everything is going to be okay"

And tomorrow, there will be another conversations again, the misery won't go anywhere. It kept repeating, everyday is the same and as voice will still be there. -
I'm sure it's about her 3yr old sister that died and when she heard the news that she was devastated. I didn't truly get the song and the emotions of it until I lost my best friend who was my grandmother I played the song on repeat for weeks and grew to understand what Amy was trying to get out about her loss. It really sucks when the ones you love move on and you can never see them again it's painful to go through.

I know this song is about Amy's sister's death but when I heard this song I was 9, and had just found out I had had a traumatic experience, so this song is deeply personal for me. Here's how I used to interpret the lyrics, the condensed meaning being:
Losing innocence

"Has no one told you she's not breathing" my first panic attack, not understanding why I couldn't breathe properly, my classmates confused, my teacher trying to restore order
"Hello, I am your mind, giving you someone to talk to"
I don't know what's wrong with me, why I lash out, why I hide and panic all the time, why I'm so sad and angry all the time, but my mind is there to distract me from the fact that I'm losing myself, that somehow I've lost my childhood
"If I smile and don't believe, soon I'll know I'll wake up from this dream"
I'm trying to convince myself it's just a bad dream, and that I'll be a normal kid when I wake up
"Don't try to fix me I'm not broken, Hello I am the lie, living for you so you can hide, don't cry"
I'm not broken, my parents want to have me tested by a doctor, but I don't need fixing, I'm still in denial and still not knowing why I'm acting the way I am. I put on a front and for a while it seems to work, and for a little while I'm not crying, or feeling negative emotions all the time.

All of a sudden I've been diagnosed with various disorders resulting from a traumatic experience I subconsciously knew of, but didn't truly know it was traumatic. I'm not understanding, but they'll tell me I'll know more in time, but I just want to be a child and to live "yesterday" (before I lost my childhood). -
At first I thought this song was about a person injured and in a coma - of course now I understand the real meaning. Ms. Amy obviously loved her sister very much and was very much affected by her untimely death. I respect the fact that she won't perform this song in public. It's hers and hers alone. All we can do is appreciate that she shared her inner feelings about a tragedy that obviously changed her life! Rock on superstar!

"Playground schoolbells ring...Again. Rain clouds come to play...Again." The settings of the playground where Amy learned her sister Bonnie was dead. "Has no one told you she's not breathing?" Maybe other kids asking her if she knew her 3 year old sister died? "Hello, I am your mind, giving you someone to talk to. Hello?" The part of her mind that knows that they're not joking and she'll never speak to her sister again. "If I smile and don't believe, soon I will wake from this dream." Amy smiles and doesn't believe the part of her mind telling her it's real. "Don't try to fix me, I'm not broken." The other kids/people try to comfort her/they think something is wrong with her because she's smiling. "Hello? I am the lie, living so you can hide." She tries not to believe her sister is dead and tries not to cry. "Don't cry." She realizes it's real and tries not to cry. "Suddenly I know I'm not sleeping." Amy knows they're telling the truth. "Hello? I'm still here, all that's left of yesterday." Yesterday Amy was with her sister, but now It's just her.

This song i thought was about someone not knowing they were dead, but then i realised it was about Amy Lee's sister dying at age 3. :( R.I.P bonnie lee xx. but anyway i would like to tell you why i thought at first this song was about someone who didn't know they were dead. At the begining of the song the lyrics are " Play ground school bell rings, again, rain clouds come to play again, has no one told she's not breathing? Hello i am your mind giving you someone to talk to too, hello?" This part, makes me think that it was the start of the story, a person who is in a strange place at a school, she is describing the atmosphere, and she sees her mother tell her sister or perhaps a brother, any family member say "she's not coming back ever." ( it like a story in my head everytime i listen to the song, like a music video or a story to go with the music) Then when it comes to the Hello part, i think it is her trying to figure out why she is there and what's happening?
Then it comes to the part "If i smile and don't, believe, soon i know i'll awake from this dream, don't try to fix me i'm not broken, hello i am the lie living for you so you can hide... don't cry." I believe she thinks she is in a dream so decides to just smile an wait to wake up from her dream, because she has no clue she's dead yet. And also, she dosn't want help from anyone, ( like maybe another spirit is trying to convince her she is not in a dream and she's dead.) But then suddenly in her mind, she believes that it could be true, and her mind is thinking yh, u r dead, and she's trying not to break down and cry. The next part is when she says "auddenly i know i'm not sleeping, hello i'm still here, all that's left of yesturday..." she has finally realised the truth and knows she is not alive, but her mind dosn't want to believe it still sois saying "I'm still here" as in you will wake up, but on the other hand she knows she wont, and is left alone.... :( i'm very out there i know but oh well that's what i see and think in my mind, and if u see an interpretation like this one it is me again i wanted to improve on it :) thanks bye :) -
I think this song is about someone who dosn't know they are dead? - i know it sounds wierd, but think about it? when she says " Hello, i am your mind, giving you someone to talk to? hello?" she can't talk to anyone else because she's not alive, so her mind talks to her to keep her company. she thinks it is a dream that no one can hear her and eventually she will wake up from sleeping and things will be normal again.... when she says "if i smile and don't believe, soon i know i'll awake, from this dream, don't try to fix me i'm not broken!" she's basically saying she will just ride it out and wait to wake up even though she thinks she's dead, she wont believe it. because she knows she'll wake up soon. and she dosn't want to be helped by any one like perhaps another ghost? because she still dosn't believe it is real. "Hello i am the lie, living for you so you can hide... don't cry" this tells me she is telling herself that it might be true and she may need to face it, and she is trying not to break down and cry because of it. "Suddenly i know i'm not sleeping, hello, i'm still here all that's left of yesturday" she has finally realised the truth that she is no longer alive, but her mind is denying this saying just wait longer you will wake up! but it never will because she is not alive. i hope that made scence to you guys, let me know if it is a good interpretation thanks ;) x

When I fisrt heard it I thought it was writted from someone else's prespective about loosing their girlfriend or someone they loved but it's about Amy's sister, Bonnie dying when she was young.

This song was written by Amy about her sister dying due to epilepsy. She never actually wanted this song to be put on the album Fallen because its a deep personal song. This song is never performed at concerts because she fears of disappointing her fans by breaking down into tears on stage.

Its about her litle sister dying from an unknown caurse and she was told about it on the playground when she was six. She has tried to play it live once but couldn't cos she was crying and couldnt sing it. The song on the cd took over 500 goes to get what u hear on the cd cos all she did was cry though it. It has that much meaning to it. She sometimes sings it to herself when she is depressed.
