When I listen to this song, it does make me think of the LGBT community, especially bisexuals. Being a closeted bisexual myself, I relate to that meaning of the song and it’s more believable for me than other interpretations.

I feel as though this song is referring specifically to the Catholic church.. I am assuming first of all that Amy, like a lot of Americans, was raised Catholic and that; based on my interpretations of songs like "The Only One" and "End of the Dream" she no longer believes in God.
The song begins with "Embrace the silence, 'cause there's nothing that can change the way I feel." I beleive that Amy is speaking about how she was at one point indoctrinated to the level where she was unable and unwilling to question what she had been taught, so she remained silent.
"Taken all that you wanted, now there's nothing that can change the way I feel." The indoctrinators have taken her will or freedom to choose her own beliefs.
All the above was referring to her past self, so when she says "Hold on little girl! The end is soon to come" She is speaking to her confused former self, and saying that she will soon come to realise the truth.
"Sick of it all, sick of it all. We will not follow." She will no longer follow an authority she believes to be wrong in both its teaching and its conduct. She is sick of the way the church told her what is right and wrong so she will no longer follow it.
"Sick of it all, sick of it all. They don't understand how sick we are, sick we are of this bottomless pit of lies, behind closed eyes." The religious leaders don't understand the minds of their followers, who want the truth and not superstition or doctrine. She may also be referring to whomever may have forced her to attend church, or invest in this belief. She now sees how full of lies and corruption the Catholic church is and how blind its followers are to these lies.
"Oceans between us, and there's nothing that can change the way I feel." The church is governed in another continent, so the theme of misrepresentation continues. Now nothing the Church says in order to bring her back to the fold will change her opinion, now that she has seen their lies.
"I can still taste the poison, of every thought, every breath I've wasted here." She is disgusted by the fact so much of her time was spent on something that is not true, as well as by the huge amount of thought it took to lose her ingrained beliefs.
Bridge and chorus mean the same as before.
"Someday you'll know the pain, someday the light will break through!" A lack of belief in god is spreading in the world, due to better education and scientific knowledge (plus the internet). So eventually the other members of the church will come to question their beliefs, and know the pain Amy felt in ridding herself of them.
"And nothing you tell yourself will save us from the truth." People's logical reasoning will eventually lead them to abandon their superstitions, no matter how hard they try to convince themselves, eventually the truth will win out. She used the words "save us" ironically, seeing as though the church often preaches of how belief will save us. Amy obviously no longer believes this to be true.
The last stanza begins with "Screaming out!" Showing how she is becoming more vocal with the distain she feels for religion, and how now that she sees its negative effects she is more "sick of it" than ever!
Obviously this is my own interpretation and I have no solid evidence to support it. Im sure what I've said the song means could be said of any religious body or state. One of the others posting here says Amy stated in an interveiw that the song is about the Arab Spring. I've not seen that interveiw but I'm sure they're not lying.
Apologies if my review offended any beliefs of yours, you have probably guessed but I don't subscribe to the whole god thing. :P

what are the symptoms of sickness which result when a woman has been controlled & oppressed for years and her eyes have been poked out? well.. i've read that she isolates herself socially or others plot to isolate her, & she either develops impulsive behaviour or no real behaviour (she feels numb to the world), she has no desire for achievement; academic, technological, political or lifetime... she has no desire for employment, she fancies people who have issues with drugs and alcohol, she goes through long periods of imprisonment, she develops demented mental health problems such as grandiose ideation- which doesn't even interest her, she is unable to happily live independently and she displays inappropriate sexual behavior such as grabbing and squeezing other people's bottoms. sometimes she believes she is a pork chop which is not grandiose at all. she takes naps because sleep is healing and it assuages her pain. :) being in a state of unconsciousness is a great escape. ha. she wants to live on a pretty meadow inside of a shiny silver airstream trailer named The Colonel whose innards are engulfed in shag carpeting. she is "sick" of being lied to by everyone and sick of not being able to tell her truth (because when she attempts to tell the truth people call her "sick"). but the lyrics "someday you'll know the pain" don't make much sense to me because OBVIOUSSSLLLLYY she knows the pain.. she knows the pain much better than she knows any living creature. she knows the pain extremely well. oh yes she does. there is no doubt about that.

Amy Lee clearly said in an Interview that this song was dedicated to the Arab Spring. Amy said "I felt like i should be a part of them, help the world to show how the arabs are sick of their ruthless leaders and how "sick we are" "
And if you put it togather it does make sense. Expect if your dumb enough to not know what is the Arab Spring... -
i think this song is about being lied to by people who just want to hide the truth from you.
you get sick of the endless lies and just want the truth.
they treat you like a little kid ("hold on, little girl") and think you can't handle the truth.

the fact that they lied puts huge distances between you. you feel like you wasted your time with them.
"Someday you'll know the pain
Someday the light will break through
And nothing you tell yourself
Will save us from the truth"
someday they will realise there was no point in them lying to you.
