It has to be about the last hours of Jesus.
There are just to many clues. Just a couple of examples:
Catch me as I fall----------- the devil takes Jesus to a high place and tells him to jump, the father will surly catch him.
Don’t turn out the light, never sleep, never die----------the bible says God is the everlasting light that never sleeps and never dies.
Really, every sentence is somehow referring to Jesus. -
I see this song as being about Schitzophrenia:
The line
"Say you're here and it's all over now":
The Schizophrenia; the visions, hallucinations, whatever you want to call them, are surrounding her, so it, her sanity is over.
"Speaking to the atmosphere":
Very often, Schizophrenics believe that they can speak to those on a higher plane of existence, therefore, The Atmosphere ---> Heaven.
"No-one's here and I fall in to myself":
Very often, because they're afraid of what others will say, Schitzophrenics withdraw in to themselves- they fall in to themselves.
"This truth drives me in to madness":
When she's diagnosed, or realises that it's Schitzophrenia, it just sends her madder.
"I know I can stop the pain if I will it all away":
She believes that if she thinks it's not there, it won't be there.
"Don't turn away
(Don't give in to the pain),
Don't try to hide
(Though they're screaming your name),
Don't close your eyes
(God knows what lies behind them),
Don't turn out the light
(Never sleep never die...)":
Schizophrenics often have strange, irrational beliefs. This is the manifestation of these.
"I'm frightened by what I've seen,
But somehow I know there's so much to come":
This is obviously a reference to Visions that some Schizophrenics experience.
"Imobilized, by my fear, and soon to be, blinded by tears":
... Not sure about this line.
"Fallen angels at my feet":
Visions.
"Whispered voices at my ear":
Hearing voices, obviously.
"Death before my eyes":
Visions again.
"Lying next to me I fear":
Erratic beliefs.
"She beckons me, shall I give in?":
Erratic beliefs, visions and hearing voices.
"Upon my end, shall I begin?":
This could reference treatment?
Forsaking all I've fallen for, I rise to meet the end...":
ECT (Elecroconvulsive Therapy) is often used as a treatment for Schitzophrenia: it often is rather dangerous, so the end: The end of the disorder, the end of sanity and potentially the end of her life.
The Latin, which means, Save us from fear, save us from death:
Referencing the other sufferers: faceless voices, asking simply to be saved. -
It is about nightmares. Amy has said that. I see it when you fall asleep and start to sink into the nightmare, sort of like Alice when she falls in the hole. She says "Catch me", but then when she gets to the ground, she realizes she's alone (no one's here and i fall into myself). She is stuck in her nightmare. She asks for help, but she's alone in it. Something evil is chasing her, probably Death. She's running from it. Though she know if she gives away she can finally find peace (i know i can stop the pain if i will it all away). But she still fights and runs to protect herself (dont turn away - dont give into the pain - dont try to hide - though theyre screaming your name - dont close your eyes - god knows what lies behind them - dont turn out the light - NEVER SLEEP, NEVER DIE (sort of like in Nightmare in Elm Street).

ok this song might be about Jesus. BUT, Jesus did not go down to hell, he went down to Hades to preach to the lost souls

Im not going to say I know exactly what this song means, because I dont. But if it IS based on religious terms, I agree with most people above, that its about Jesus' crucifixion. It really does make a LOT of sense when you look at it that way.
But again, Im not an expert, so dont take my word for it. Just something to think about, more less. -
What I think when I hear this song is that it tells the story of a person that has been tormented severely and they are begging to be released from the torment (hence the "Catch me as I fall. Say you're hear and it's all over now.) But they feel like their savior doesn't respond and they try to just distance themselves from the world. Then they start to think that they could fight the pain away. The chorus I think is from the POV of the person they are begging to save them. The supposed rescuer is telling them not to give in and to hold on for just a little bit longer. In the second verse we return to the opinion of the victim. The torment is continuing and they are afraid of what they know is coming. They're too scared to move, but at the same time they can't stop themselves from crying. In the finale the angel of death is beckoning the victim to come with them and get away from the pain. Said victim questions whether they should go and eventually decides to forsake the world and the pain and rises to meet the end of it all. That's my take on it.

If it IS about religion (which it might not be!!) I would see it as such:
"Catch me as I fall, say you're here and it's all over now. Speaking to the atmosphere, no one's here and I fall into myself" could be relating to a loss of faith. She wants to believe God is there, but no one is answering her prayers, so she doesn't know how to continue believing
"This truth drives me into madness, I know I can stop the pain if I will it all away, if I will it all away" Meaning that the fact that she's lost her faith is giving her no reason to live, and if she really wanted to she could numb herself, not care, but she doesn't want to completely cut herself off from the God she's believed in.
"Don't turn away (Don't give in to the pain) Don't try to hide (Though they're screaming your name) Don't close your eyes (God knows what lies behind them) Don't turn out the light (never sleep, never die)" Meaning that she doesn't want to stop believing, and although everyone is calling her to see the truth and she is resisting, she should look it in the face and resist. She shouldn't ignore what's happening either, because her imagination of what's happening could be worse, and if she doesn't die, she doesn't have to face the supposed truth of their being no God.
"I'm frightened by what I see, but somehow I know that there's much more to come." Everything that's going on is scaring her, giving her more reason not to believe, and she knows that there will be more evidence against it on the way.
"Immobilized by my fear, and soon to be blinded by tears" meaning that the fear of a complete loss of fear is causing her to stop everything that's going on in her life, just to mourn God.
"Fallen angels at my feet, whispered voices in my ear, death before my eyes, lying next to me I fear" All of the evidence against a God; people she believed to be absolute good are dead, people are trying to corrupt her, people are dying all around her and it's getting hard to believe, also the death of her faith.
"She beckons me shall I give in, upon my end shall I begin, forsaking all I've fallen for I rise to meet the end" Temptation is all around her, and she's wavering; her faith ends and her rejection of God begins. "Forsaking all I've fallen for" meaning that she's now given up completely; she's forsaking what she once believed to be true, the supposed lies she had fallen for. and the last line, meaning that she's no longer afraid of death or what lies afterwards because she does not belong to God anymore, and is now corrupted.
The Latin at the end (either "save yourselves from danger, save yourselves from evil" or SOMETHING like that) means to save yourself from the corruption. -
While answering a question by a fan, if she could still relate or still likes the old Evanescence music Amy said that some she could and others she could not because she was not in a dark period in her life and gave Whisper as an example making it sound like she wrote the song based on a real experience not a hypothetical event or something that happened to someone else. But Whisper is still played because it is a good song to play live and if Amy is mad or having a bad day than she can relate to it.
But this song could be about lots of things someone dying, in danger, or someone going through a crisis but decides they are going to get through it-("Don't turn away... I can stop the pain if I will it all away") and "God knows what lies behind them" could mean someone who wronged them will pay in the end, don't let the b******s wear you down. -
This song is about being haunted by the death of her sister. Many of Amy Lee's songs are about the death of her sister - thinking about death, having darker feelings, and choosing not to give in because of her faith/beliefs. Most of the songs on Fallen are about the struggle between good and evil, and how regardless of faith we all battle our own personal vices. Several of the songs on The Open Door are about her ex battling Bi-Polar disorder, and she revisits her sister's death as well.

I believe that it could be about christ's crucifixion. Some of the lyrics REALLY DO go with it. as one person had said about the fallen angels, and speaking to the atmospere. the "I know I can stop the pain if I will if all away," I think has something to do with it too. jesus knew he could get ritght off the cross and will away all the pain he went through, but he didn't!! everyone is freaking out cause evanescence isn't a christian band. I know, I understand.

Okay, here's my spin on this:
I think this song has only slight religious aspects in it. In my opinion, I think it's about a person who has just gotten over something that was very hard to get over or was very bad. And in their brains, they still haven't completely gotten over it, because they still want whatever it is.
When it says that they're in some sort of pain, it reminds me of withdrawal. I think the person is trying to cope with the aftermath of addiction to something with a person that truly cares about them. -
I think you'll find on the Evanescence website in the FAQ section it says it means:
Save us from danger
save us from evil
This would make more sense seeing as though it is a choir singing, being more than one person. -
I think it is of someone who had died and he/she is in Hell, so he/she is trying to overcome Hell and fighting for his soul to stay in one piece.

I agree that this song has a psychological standpoint. It talks about fears and being alone, having a battle with many negative things. In an interview Moody told that they wanted to express a free christian view, not some rules. So it has nothing to do with religion, but I believe the band in the knew album made a change and doesn't express despair anymore. So they close their album with whisper so they "whisper" us that:
I can stop the pain if I wii it all away
The song secretly tells us to fight our fears. It's not easy, but if we really want it we can do it. So:
forsaken all I fall for I rise to meet the end
We can forget the depressed person we used to be and not always look into the dark side of life. It's our choice, we're not just hopeless victims
