I used to think the title had nothing to do with the actual lyrics (which is common in fall out boy songs), but well, regardless of Pete's sexual preferences, I think the song's about Patrick (true blue anyone?)
not saying they're "omg in looove", but they're best friends and they do love each other, even if it's not in "that" way.

so basically, I think the song is about how Patrick is the only one who gets Pete, after all he's been turning Pete's nonsense into hit singles for quite a while ("I was born under a bad sign, you saved my life"). So maybe somewhere along the way Pete got confused and thought that maybe he's "supposed" to be in love with Patrick. like, they're soul mates except for the fact they're both not attracted to guys.

Someone here said, "The guy loses his girlfriend so he walks around in her shirt and shoes" or something like that...okay, first of all, the title is "gay is not a synonym for shitty" and second of all, wtf kind of guy could even fit into his gf's shoes?? And why the heck would he even wear womens' clothing (despite his love for her)? I think it's (or at least that one part about the shirt and shoes) is maybe from the girl's POV or maybe bisexuality and having a really big crush on another dude he's close to (Since I'm pretty sure Pete wrote this song, maybe he's talking about Patrick?? not a crazed Peterick fan or anything, just saying!) But then again, why would Patrick agree to sing about that...ehh, this song is kind of a mystery...
Before I found out what "GINASFS" stood for when I first started listening to this song, I always thought it was about a typical relationship until I gave it more thought...but now I'm not so sure it would be about two dudes too. So anyways, here's my interp:
"Trade baby blues for wide-eyed browns" For some reason, even though it doesn't really make much sense when you think about it, that he wants to trade his own eyes for his love interest's because he envies them? like maybe he wants to be with them so much, he'd be willing to be him?? ha, told you it wouldn't make sense. Or maybe he used to love a girl/boy with blue eyes but is now in-love with a brown-eyed one. Idkkk. Well who in the band has baby blues? Patrick. Who has brown? Pete and Andy, but since Pete wrote the song, I doubt they're talkin about Andy^^ So the characters in this song are supposedly Patrick and Pete, like a lot of the songs are about them (but still not most of them, probably) So I pretty much agree with almost all the other interps...I guess I'll shut up now...gah, mine sucked:p

I think its like how guys share rooms and like the dude shares a room with his best friend and when he leaves he thinks he likes him and misses him a lot and walks around in his clothes and stuff. It's probably wrong but it makes sense because the title is gay is not a synonym for shitty. And he says it's strange that he loves him so he's kinda weirded out and stuff. And I think he's turning gay because it says trade baby blues (girls) for wide eyed browns (guys). But its probably wrong because Pete is married to Ashlee.

This one has always been so clear to me. I guess to really understand this one, you would have to get Fall Out Boy. Like really be familiar with them pre-hiatus.

First of all, it's obviously not about a girl. The title means Gay Is Not A Synonym For Shitty, which is a quote from bassist Pete Wentz.

I don't think it's really about Mikey Way... Well it sort of is but not in the way you may think. It's also something Pete wrote about lead singer Patrick Stump. I think he wrote this about getting over Mikey and how Patrick helped him.

"Trade baby blues for wide eyed browns..."
I think this one means when Pete first got with Mikey and was trading in Patrick's blue eyes for Mikey's brown ones.

"Things aren't the same anymore, some nights it gets so bad I almost pick up the phone..."
Well obviously after Pete and Mikey had their little breakup, Pete would want to call him sometimes. Just like any breakup.

"To sleep with your old shirts and walk through this house in your shoes..."
This line speaks for itself really. He's missing his ex (Mikey) like any person would in this situation.

    "I'm supposed to love you..."
This one was a bit tricky I think. Maybe Pete was saying it about Mikey, like he lost feelings and thought he was supposed to love him. But I actually believe maybe Pete was realizing his feelings for Patrick and was saying like "Wait... Maybe I'm supposed to love you instead."

"You saved my life, that night on the roof of your hotel..."
And the most obvious line. This is definitely about Patrick saving Pete from overdosing in his hotel room one night. And that's when he obviously is able to get over Mikey and find comfort in Patrick's friendship. And whether that friendship ever turned into more, even for just a little bit, that's something only Pete and Patrick will ever know.

So yeah, that's my interpretation of the song. Don't quote me on this because I could be totally wrong, but it's how I'll always look at it.

I heard somewhere that the lyrics “and you saved my life, that night on the roof of your hotel” (im half-awake excuse my grammar) were about Patrick, because Patrick was the one to find Pete trying to/overdosed in his hotel room? Or something? Not sure where that’s from if anyone knows feel free to tell me.

I'm no expert or whatever xD
But I feel as if it is kinda aimed at a few people; Mainly Mikey Way. I mean they shared a quick bond, something that you can turn into love, like the way you miss them/ the short time spent together ect. So I guess it is about Mikey, but I mean if it isn't whatever, he has a whole album about him xD

You have to understand that when you look at the lyrics, you have to know the people behind it. Just saying, I don't believe fall out boy would give a song that title and not try to make a point about it. There are also little things that hint at the meaning, like how this song was released...
But sometimes, understanding a song fully doesn't really matter. If they wanted you to know, they would have told you.

The song is clearly about Mikey Way.
One of Pete's exes could of had blue eyes and Mikey has brown eyes . The song was also written after the summer they where together and mikey was married when the album was realsed so he couldn't say it was blanantly about him.

Ok so I feel like this song is about patrick having feelings towards pete (not saying its peterick stuff, I don't really ship it lol). Pete was the one who basically made patrick's life better...(not quite sure how to explain it....)

Well Patrick and Pete aren't gay obviously, since they are both married to woman, but they do spend alot of time together on tour ect. Which may cause alot of them having some sort of flirty relationship. Usually having a friend around for a long time causes ppl to flirt sometimes (I know this cause i tend to do that to my best friend lol).

If anyone wonders what the song title means, it means Gay Isn't A Synonym For Shitty or Stupid. Hmmmm wonder how they came up with that title....

Well there is some pointless jibber jabber. Have a wonderful day

I think it's about the emotional turmoil you go through when you don't fit the stereotype, like boys should like girls or the stereotype that blonde hair blue eyes is prettier than dark shades(trading baby blue for wide eyed browns). Pete has never been a conformist, so I think it's about him coming to terms with himself and dealing with the critisism of the conformist public. I love this song and I hope this helped.

I once heard that this song was about Pete cheating on Patrick with Ryan Ross. (Probably not true, but just throwing that out there.)

"Trade baby blues for wide-eyed browns."

I think the guy in the song is missing an ex who he regrets breaking up with, and he's possibly with someone new but wishes he was still with his ex, or alone and is trying to think about getting over her. The line that really gets me is "trading baby blues for wide-eyed browns". I keep going back and forth between thinking that he is now with someone with brown eyes as opposed to his ex, who had blue, and he wants her back, or thinking that he's with a blue-eyed girl and wishes he could trade her for his ex, who had brown.

The tital means Gay is Not A Synonym for Stupid.

The song is about being gay...

Trade baby blues for wide-eyed browns
    (START TO SEE THE TRUTH)

I sleep with your old shirts
And walk through this house in your shoes
    I know it's strange,
(PEOPLE SOMETIMES DON"T UNDERSTAND IT SO THEY SAY ITS BAD)

I's a strange way of saying that I know
    I'm supposed to love you,
    I'm supposed to love you
(IM SUPPOSED TO LOVE YOU SPEAKS FOR ITSELF)

And I don't have time to break down the verses but you can easily see how it applys.

FOB has some strange song titles, but not random. Even if you haven't put it together, they have to have something to do with the song.

I think it's about a failed relationship, where he really loves her but it's hard for him to express his love in a way for her to understand. They broke up but he still loves her and sometimes he misses her so much that he almost calls her. He wears her old things because they remind him of her and he can't get over her. They're relationship hurt them both because she could never understand. The rest of the lyrics like the shadow on the wall are all things about how he doesn't want to let her go and he loves her still. The line about throwing caution to the wind with a lousy arm simply means he took a chance but he's very unlucky.

i think the title means that just because something or someone sounds bad or whatever, it doesnt mean its gay. okay, let me out it simpler, whenever i walk around with a fall out boy poster in my binder or im talking about them, someone will ALWAYS go, "ew they are so gay" or "they are faggots, their music sucks" i'll be like, just because you dont like their music, it doesnt mean they are gay or they are faggots, so quit gay and just say sh*tty! okay!?! sorry bout that

I think the song is about a relationship is about to end...
That's wat 'Prince of any failing empire' means.

When it says 'Everybody wants, to drive on through the night if it's a drive back home', i reckon its they want to get the big break up fight over and done with just so they can put it behind them..

    'Things aren't the same anymore,
Some nights it gets so bad that you almost pick up the phone'

He's alone and is trying to resist ringing his ex just to here her voice..

'I sleep with your old shirts'
He wants to stay close to her when she's gone.

'And walk through this house in your shoes'
You know the saying "dont judge someone until you walk a mile in their shoes"? Well he's trying to see her point of view in everything..

'It's a strange way of saying that I know I'm supposed to love you
    I'm supposed to love you'
That they've been in a relationship for a long time n that maybe from what he's heard from other couples he should love her by now..

'Photo-proofed kisses I remember so well'

Maybe that there are so many pictures of them kissing but he knows its just an act put on for photo's because he's not in it 10O percent!! You no like wen someone wants to take a picture and your in a bad mood but you have to smile anyway!!

This is just my take on it!! I could be very far off..but it doesnt matter what the true interpretation is..its only what you take from a song thats important!!
