   There are people who have a difficulty being fully present, it's a trait, they dream. They sink down into their minds, adrift in the waves. When you are that kind of person, and someone hurts you, it changes your world, you think about it over and over, rehashing, analyzing, imagining to no real end.. it turns the trait into a prison without sun.. and we think about that too.. and miss it, aware of the emptiness and aware that we don't connect.

   No one can really know what is going on within someone's head while writing a song like this. Fiona Apple's song Sullen Girl is one of those pieces where you have to listen to it more than once to get the true value of emotion. Deep inside the character of the song's heart is a hollow space left empty by someone that has deeply hurt her. Even if by abuse or a heart-harding realtionship, many can relate to the lyrics. She shows she was once happy, but is now left to deal with the sadness of reality. We all feel like we are drowning under turbulent waters. I know that through a personal experience, you just want to be left alone to ponder what happened. In the end, the sullen exterior is someone that needs to have counciling for what's going on inside.
