#1 top rated interpretation:When he's 15 and "caught between 10 and 20," his life is at a midpoint between childhood and adulthood. He finds himself "counting the ways to where you are" with "you" referring to the love of his life that he hopes to find.
At 22, having met this girl, and presumably having spent the night with ("making our way back from mars" alluding to their experience), he is once again looking ahead to their future.
At 33, he has a child on the way, making him a "they" as he has to think about himself and his family.
At 45, he enters a "mid-life crisis," and as he says is chasing the days of his life (possibly his youth, if the idea of a mid-life crisis is accepted).
At 67, the "sun is getting high," a way of representing his life by the passage of the sun over the horizon, and meaning that his time will soon be up.
When 99 arrives, he's once again "counting the ways to where you are," only this time this refers to seeing his (presumably) deceased wife in the next life.
All throughout, he reminisces of the time when he was 15 and dreaming about finding the right girl and making a life for himself, something which remains with him until the end of his 100 years. -

#3 top rated interpretation:I think that he is saying at 15 you have options, and a chance to do different things. He meets his love at 22. Then at 33 he is planning for a family. At 45, I don't think the "crisis" is an affair, i think its just the classic mid-life crisis when you feel like you haven't done anything worthwhile. At 67 he sees his time is limited. All of a sudden he's 99 his life is almost over, and he remembers his love and how many options he used to have. Then he's gone.

As a 64 year old person, this song has truly affected me emotionally. Viewing my life in retrospect, I would give anything to go back to my early years to be able to change just how my life has turned out. Don’t get me wrong: I love what has resulted from what happened. But so many times I’ve truly regretted the path that my life took.

My son at a very young age of 12 was so affected by this song that he can't hold back his tears. The message of this song is the sad truth that our life is not permanent and does come to an end.

Just a song about life, from a man's perspective. When you're 15, you have all the time in the world and are not looking for much beyond the next day - maybe a few dreams and goals, but not much because you're 15 and still a kid. Come 22, you begin to settle down, find a girl, and an occupation. Come 33, you're on your way with a family and a career. Come 45 you reach the mid-age crisis - perhaps an affair, but mostly just questioning your choices. Come 67 your life starts to wane, but you've gained a lot of wisdom along the way. Finally, come 99, you want just a bit more time - or perhaps you're ready to move on to the next level of existence and reunite with your soul mate. As a 53 year old man, I can relate to a lot of what he's saying in this song.

i chose this as one of the songs to accompany a video loop for my 94 year old dad's wake tomorrow. He had a great life adventure, including nearly 60 years of very good marriage. On his deathbed, he could no longer talk but he made extremely intense eye contact with my mom for what seemed forever, drinking in and memorizing her face, burning emotion. My interpretation of this song? Its the meaning that love brings to our ephemeral life.

I think its about chasing the dream of the "soul mate " 15 stuck between 10 and 20. A young man dreaming. 22 finds the woman he thinks is her but theres still time. 33 consumed with the everyday happenings of , life etc but,not satisfied. 45 the crisis of realizing not being happy. Halftime youre wiser and really know what you want and wont settle. 67 etc still willing to wait because theres no better wish. Very applicable. The end sums it up. At 99 hes still dreaming of where she is.

I believe that this song is about how when he was young he wanted to be older and as he got older and went through the pros and cons of life and enjoyed it. He realized that when you are young it seems like forever to grow older but the older you get the faster time flies and he realized that 15 was the best time of his life and he wished to be 15 again. Even though many good things happened in his life like when meet his lover and when he started a family and had kids. He still thinks that 15 was the best time of his life. I also believe that he is saying to enjoy life while it lasts and cherish every moment for each moment is special.

From a 60 yr old man's perspective: It's about memories of youthful ideas, ideals and experiences that often diminish with age. Always remembering and hopefully holding onto some of that joyful essence of our youthful spirit for the adventures in life. At each stage of transition, calling upon that spirit to cushion us during trying times of obstacles. From this 60 yr old man's perspective, the song has dramatically focused my attention to my mortality and final chapters. I become saddened and emotional whenever I listen to it. It motivates me to seek joy,love & adventure till my last breath.

I interpreted the "you" to be himself at the age of 15. He is perhaps on his death bed, and falls into his final sleep - replaying the best years of his life. I interpret this song as an old man who is laying, basically, on his death bed and he is remembering his life, how much he loved his soulmate, and how quickly his life went by, and he feels as though he should still be 15 and starting his life.

I think this song was written in a plea to fifteen year olds not to commit suicide because they have their whole lives ahead of them. The lyrics suggest that whatever troubles you may have as a fifteen-year-old, you're on the brink of growing up and 'there's still time' for you to grow and change as a person.
