: The verse depicts the way in which Florence and her lover are in some way separated, or distanced. Florence is weakened, emotionally frail, and before her lies a seemingly insurmountable task (‘tryna cross a canyon with a broken limb’). She seeks her lover for refuge and aid, yet he is distant and self-absorbed, contemplating his life and struggles (‘you were on the other side’ ‘like always wondering what to do with life’), this appears to be a behaviour typical of her lover. Florence resigns herself to her lover’s antics, believing she could cope as she always had (‘I’d already had a sip, so I reasoned I was drunk enough to deal with it’) yet the notion that her lover is on the ‘other side’ resonates with her.Florence is deeply enamoured with her partner, however she questions if a relationship in which her partner is emotionally withholding is one a good ‘man’ could truly hold, she begins to see the imbalance and dark side of her relationship. Florence comes to an epiphany of sorts (signalled by the drastic change in music), the man with who she is with is perhaps not as virtuous as previously thought, he holds her in a position of not knowing (‘let me dangle at a cruel angle’) she sees that he never completely invests in the relationship (‘sometimes you’re half in and then you’re half out’), never committing to the relationship entirely (‘but you never close the door’) Florence questions the virtuosity of a man capable of inflicting such pain (what kind of man loves like this)The pain that her lover is inflicting upon her is not only to her detriment but to his also, he is foolish to continue in such a vein, as he is ultimately hurting himself. (‘You holy fool, all coloured blue’). Her lover is somehow capable of destroying all that is around him mercilessly (‘you do such damage, how do you manage’) it is suggested that this is almost comic. Florence understands that attempting to ‘win’ against him is not in his best interests for they are a unit (‘but I can’t beat you, ‘cause I’m still with you’). She only asks that he shows mercy and relents in his tyrade (‘oh mercy I implore’). She wonders how he maintains such damage when she herself is so utterly exhausted (‘how do you do it?’) When she at last begins to let go she is once more made to confront this man (‘I think I’m through it, then I’m back against the wall’)
