I agree that it's about the people who he has lost from the music industry. Friends and heros. Something that nobody has mentioned yet is that he hears them up there and desires to join them but is struggling to ignore those thoughts

Amazing FOO FIGHTERS song about living the parrael life of comparing and aligning the Place[Your Neighborhood] that you live on, to the heavenly starry skies that's needed for guidance in your spiritual walk and struggles through life. with the fight to stay cool when losing your loved ones down here and up there. All in order not to get lost between the two. That's just below God's upper dome. Where down here on the standing earth's neighborhood, many ''STARS'' of different kinds were and are still idiolized by us, like they were angels and messengers of God that came down with words of love,music and knowledge, that have been entertaining us, but lately too many have been burning out and dying on us. Like ''exploding stars'' that went out like the big bang theory of the starry skies, that's always been under the ceiling of The Higher Power. Where THEY"VE been with us and are now knocking on Heaven's door to be let back in the Heavenly Kingdom of God to continue to play their music up there for Him.

I agree with the point of view that this is about all of the great music playing in heaven by all of the great artists we have lost. This is one of their best songs. The good part of it all is we all interpret words differently.

Dave Grohl stated in an interview that this song was about how ever since he was a kid, he believed there was other life out there, the sky being space, and the neighborhood being planets with other life.

Definitely a flat earth video. Love the shot of Tesla next to the rocket ship toy. Tesla knew the earth is flat.

Just FYI the lyrics are written as heaven is a Big Bang now, not "big band" in the album booklet I have. But still sounds pretty likely that it's about the death of all those musicians in heaven etc

I thought he was talking about God and the book the kids are reading is like the Bible and the light at the end is God looking down on them. -

Yeah the first thing I thought of when I heard that song was the firmament. Banging on the ceiling... It's like he's banging on the ceiling telling all his dead artist friends to keep it down. The ceiling, being the sky, being the neighbor"hood"

I got my facts mixed up before. Grohl got a Lemmy tattoo, because he was one of his music heroes.
RHCP's Flea has a Bowie tattoo. They both talked in a video about it that's why I got confused. -
I might be completely wrong but when I first heard the song it gave me feelings of death. Grohl was a friend and bandmate of Cobain, don't forget that. He was also part that huge Grunge break out in the '90s of which most artists have gone to an early grave with the most recent addition being Chris Cornell. Grohl has also described David Bowie as one of his musical heroes. Grohl has gotten a tattoo to honor Bowie after his death almost two years ago.
The parts "sky is a neighborhood","heaven is a big band now" and "banging on the ceiling, keep it down" just sound to me like the sky is full of musicians who knew or have inspired eachother so now it's like a neighborhood. Inevitably they have formed a big band and make noise with the music. Grohl is moved by that as so many of the people he knew and admired are now dead. It almost feels like the sky is producing sound which doesn't let him sleep, or like the Sirens is calling him or something, that's why he wants them to keep it down. The spooky music video just adds to it. -

They shot multiple thermonuclear missiles miles above the earth and found that no matter which direction, how fast or how powerful the nuclear weapon it would always explode at around 250 miles above the earths highest point. -
