   At 14 years old, I had already formed an opinion of the meaning of "No time for the killing floor" when our social studies teacher put this question to the class. The lyrics leading up to this line are awash in sweet youthfulness. I could not interpret a dark or gruesome meaning into verses that shared lines like "summer friend, watch and chain, revolving doors".... The "Killing Floor" is the name of a music venue, a club, a place where they danced the summer away, but now summer is over.

   The “killing floor” is a metaphor for fighting against himself about his sexuality. He is done fighting and is spreading his wings to move on to another lifestyle. He says he’s gay in the second chorus.

   He is no doubt in a bad relationship he’s ending, but he’s leaving and proclaiming he is gay. It’s clear if you listen to the song with this in kid. This is not a difficult song to understand.

   No Time lyrics is about a guy who does not want you in their life. They have no time for you. They have moved on.

   No Time is about a guy who does not need a summer friend - meaning a friend who you see during summer times only. He does not want the love she gives. He found a better place to go or to be with. He is moving on.
   
   So when someone says that they have no time for you, believe them. It means they have moved on and they don't want you to be in their life.
   
   If you have friends before you met them, treasure them because they will be with you through thick and thin.
   
   It's like the lyrics, I could read your mind......... BOOM!

   Both Randy Bachman and Burton Cummings have written about using "the killing floor" in their song, "No Time". Randy wrote they were in the states and they heard several Nam vets utter the phrase, the killing floor. Bachman said they knew the phrase meant the slaughterhouse floor, but they felt this was not the exact context the soldiers meant. So they asked one and he said it was in reference to the jungle and battlefields of the Vietnam War were like the slaughterhouse. Cummings confirmed the story.

   I completely understood the meaning of the lyrics of this song as soon as I heard it for the first time in 1969. That year I graduated from high school in New Jersey and left for college in North Carolina the following fall. During my Junior and Senior year in high school I had a steady girlfriend and we were getting pretty serious. We had all of those commonly shared memories guys have with their girls, similar the lyrics in the song: "gentle rain, watch and chain, revolving doors, etc." Not those specifically, but other just as personal to just us. After I left for college my high school girlfriend wrote me quite often, but I got involved with new friends, activities, and social events at my new school. Again as in the song: "I found myself some wings" Soon I got involved with other girls at college, and my high school girlfriend receded into my past. Now there was "No time for a summer friend, No time for the love you send. Seasons change and so did I. You need not wonder why." and thus "there's no time left for you." Every time I hear this song it takes me back to those days.

    "The Killing Floor" is where they slaughter cattle. It's where they are killed in a butcher house. Are they referring to being tied to one person as the slaughter of independence? Shades of "Free Bird". A valid though harsh interpretation.

    It's coinciding with the breakup of the killing four. The Beatles. Think about it. It fits so well. I'm sure it's not that deep though.

    It means that it's time to move on. Insanity is doing the same thing over and over expecting diff. Results. I think it means he's tired of the hamster wheel with someone or society in general.

    I heard a story that Randy apparently told during a show years ago. They were traveling to the States ... for a a tour. Once they reached the borders in california they were told since they were on a Visa that they could be drafted on the spot and sent to Vietnam. Since they were not interested ... they turned around and went back home... and wrote this song about their experience. I guess no one will ever really know.

    It has already been stated by Burton Cummings (he wrote the song with Randy Bachman)that the song is about a breakup with a woman. It isn't about death, as many have stated over the years.

    When I think of the song "No Time," and I read on people's interpretations of the song, I found my own interpretation.When I think on how things are now,and with how things must have been when the group was on tour,it can refer to more of the past-paced living that has come from industrialization and how it has became inextricably weaved into our way of living and being - and it consumes us (at least that is one interpretation of that particular song).With a youtube video of the song (the beginning shows mechanical clock components gives reference to how our perception of time changes with circumstances), it draws out the premonition on how things of the dynamics of industrialization, and with the belief of acquiring better things when it can really isolate a person from things to being more of a bystander in things instead of something personal.The group may not have been able to articulate the things in this specific context,but I am certain they were feeling and experiencing those things.The things we tend to value (or at least want to in some degree) isn't being given as much availability as we would like to because of things of economy,etc influencing things of society and culture more than we would like them to.The person is feeling compelled to pursue these indistinct endeavours.At some points of time in each of our lives, we can identify with this type of mentality.Whether it has been used to communicate this to a friend, family member, significant other, it depends.Could I be reading more into this? Possibly.The melody and lyrics maintain a consistent pattern.
