Everybody's Talkin' Lyrics

Everybody's talkin' at me
I don't hear a word they're saying
Only the echoes of my mind

People stop and stare
I can't see their faces,
Only the shadows of their eyes

chorus

I'm going where the sun is shining
Through the pooring...

This is a song about dreams made but never realized. It is a story of freedom from the past through the hopes of a brighter future.
Unbeknown to the singer, dreams are not realized by running away from the past. They must be carefully crafted and executed. Otherwise, they are nothing more than a series of disconnected experiences that lead you on a road to nowhere. In the long run you find yourself as nothing more than a drifter, wandering from flower to flower but never having a garden of your own.

This song reminds me of when I got out of the Navy. I was asked by my superiors to re- enlist. Even on the day I left a CPO said you will be back.

Now I looking at retiring in a couple of years from a company that I have worked at for over 38 years. I imagine they may ask me to stick around once that I announce that I’m leaving. If they do I will be hearing this song in my head.

This song for me, represents mental health.

How that, once a label has been given to an individual, others' perception and behaviour changes towards them.

It shows how confused and vulnerable the sufferer is left feeling (within their own mind) and how they no longer recognise the personalities as a result.

    *Everybody's talkin' at me
    I don't hear a word they're saying
Only the echoes of my mind*

*People stop and stare, I can't see their faces, only the shadows of their eyes*

Then it shows how contemplating suicide may be tempting. As a relief from the torturous agony of needing to be loved & accepted - just as you are. Unconditional love.

*I'm going where the sun keeps shining, through the pouring rain, where the weather suits my clothes.

According to Harry Dean Stanton, who sings the song in the biographical documentary : "Harry Dean Stanton : partly fiction", this song is about someone on heroin.

The song is about the solitariness of an individual in a crowded city as portrayed in the film. There is no connection made and no common thoughtwave.

Perhaps it's the desire to escape the trappings of fame. It's understand that famous people lose a certain amout of "freedom" and privacy.
