Imagine Dragons: Smoke and Mirrors Meaning
Smoke and Mirrors Lyrics
This is my way
Show me a sign
Sweep me away
This is my word,
Heartbreaker, gatekeeper
I'm feeling far away, I'm feeling right there
Deep in my heart, deep in my mind
Take me away, take me away
This is my word
Dream...

I think this song is about maturity, depression, and seeing the world for the first time. He says he has seen everything is ‘smoke and mirrors’ (lies) and he wanted ‘your truth’ (guidance). Also it ‘came crashing down on me’ (he saw everything for what it truly was too quickly).

A awesome cool song for today's day that is more relevant today than ever before. About a frustrated ''spiritual soul'' that just wants to believe and know the truth[world news] of this world that we are all living in and by many times. Which unfortunately is for the most part, just ''Smoke and Mirrors'' that They[lying Actors] want you to believe in Their acts. Unless you get into or better yet have THE WORDS OF JESUS FROM THE BIBLE ONLY. When at the end that's the only Truth left to know Them liars by the fruitcakes They produce. Meanwhile The Spiritual Soul in this song just wants to BELIEVE the other person in the Human relationship to be truthful with Him, especially when it comes to God.

This song follows a narrator's conversation with death or any other archetypal character while trying to decide right from wrong. "Dream maker, life taker/ Open up my mind" The narrator is asking death to reveal to him answers for guilt ridden questions. When Reynolds sing "All that I believe/ Is it a dream/ Is it just smoke and mirrors" He is asking if his beliefs are an illusion or actually true. Reynolds "Wants to believe" that he knows any true answer, but only the "Heartbreaker, Gatekeeper (again referencing the archetypal character of death" knows.

I very clearly interprate this song as about a person's beliefs, the foundation for their world, being thrown radically into question. They struggle for clarity as they question if all they've known, as the song says, is just smoke and mirrors. They want to believe, but they also need the truth, asking the "heartbreaker, dream-maker"; who has the answers, to open up their mind. This idea of beliefs shattering and questioning one's world seems like a common theme in this album, most notably in "Dream"
