I'm thinking she wrote this for two reasons, one for the loved ones she lost, and two, for loved ones her fans lost. No need to bicker, that is what is so beautiful about the song, it fits almost any situation you are grieving the loss of a loved one or friend.

This song was written for a fan because her child was in the hospital dying from cancer.

Per an interview, this was written in part about the loss of her dog (I believe) and a couple other deaths that happened around the same time. I don't recall it being about the loss of her mother. This is about that moment when you say goodbye to a loved one (human or pet) and you free them to go. That being said, we played this at my best friends funeral when he passed in 2013. He loved ITM. Currently, I am listening to it as I am about to put a pet down.

Ive had the priviledge of spending the last 10years with the most magical, positive, joy filled spirit that blessed this mother earth for 39years our sister Caeli Tu Marie passed unexpectedly. We all are try to catch our breath and you would to if you knew her or maybe at least someone like her. This song...this band was presented to me out of left field by my sister. She sat on me..seriously literally sat on me to stay still and listen to the live version. 1/2 second into it...painful, freeing euphoria (oxymoron I know) set upon my being. Totally drowned in emotions I didnt know that my sister was preparing me/us for what was to come.
Living life without her. Was she screaming this to us??? was she already feeling a death we all didn't know about??? I look for closure...there will never be one. I do know for her 1.5 months after she turned me on to this song she was gone and I will never doubt she knew. She left us something to sing, scream, cry too... Geez her mother isn't dead. Google it people. In her interviews Maria states the song is about "several" deaths. A friend who had lung cancer, a pet, and a 15 year old boy who died that she had met and whom had been influenced by their music.

This song is about my cousin Teresa loosing her son Zach when he was just 15. That is why their CD The Dream is dedicated to him. He was the most amazing kid in the world.

This song is about a boy who is dying and a girl who has to let go, but she can't because he is her life and now her life is dying, so even though he says he is ready to let go, she isn't and she is internally dead because of this
