Jackson Browne: Stay Meaning

"Stay," an updated version of an oldie hit from Maurice Williams and the Zodiacs, is the last song on Jackson Browne's "Running on Empty" album. That entire album is about the highs and lows in the life of a pop musician on a lengthy concert tour.
Much of the album could easily be perceived as a rich, self-pitying rock star whining about how hard his life is. Perhaps that's why this song was added at the end, to show that Jackson Browne ISN'T just feeling sorry for himself. He LOVES playing music for his fans and he LOVES the feeling he gets from performing before a live crowd. The two hours he spends playing his songs in a large arena are dynamite! He wouldn't give them up for anything.
In "Stay," Jackson Browne tells the audience, "You only see the fun part of this job. But in order to enjoy these two hours on stage every night, I have to endure a lot of boredom and and frustration. Playing music in concert is fun, but traveling for hours by bus to GET to the next concert isn't fun at all. But the shows themselves are so great, so much fun, that I never want them to end. I always want every show to go on a little longer."
