James Arthur: Safe Inside Meaning
Safe Inside Lyrics
Watched you changing in front of my eyes
What can I say?
Now that I'm not the fire in the cold
Now that I'm not the hand that you hold
As you're walking away
Will you call me to tell me you're...

The first time I heard this song I thought about a teenage girl or a young adult and her father him knowing she is out doing drugs and partying. he is reminiscing on her growth at the start of the song then going forward he is worrying about where she is but knowing all he can do is talk to her about the drug and alcohol abuse because he knows how the outside world as a father, he knows she has to figure it out on her own. but that doesn't stop him from worrying hoping she will call him just to let him know she is inside and okay but at the end you realize he knows about his hope futile

This song was written for/about James’ sister, he is telling her that he doesn’t want her to make his mistakes but if she does he will still love her. Also at the beginning of the song James was singing about her growing up “watched you changing in front of my eyes”and becoming more independent “now that I’m not the hand that you hold as your walking away’’.
