Might be way off, but to me this songs reads way too much like someone coercing "Annie" to sleep with them etc. in exchange for help to make her famous. It's such a common practice, as we all know... bigger celebrities offering all sorts of deals for.. well, you know. To young attractive aspiring actresses, especially. The whole text is very condescending towards this "Annie", basically mocking her, systematically destroying her confidence, making it seem like she has no chance to make it in showbiz and she is bound to fail - and then the actual offer comes to light: "Will you go down on me?"
And then he continues with his sly promises, making it seem like he *truly* believes in her and wants to help...: "'Cause Annie, you're a star... that's just not going very far. I know the world will know your name, and you'll be famous as you are - 'cause I'll sing for you." He'll "sing" for her alright... I see that line as he will become what she is known for. He will make her famous perhaps, but it might be in a very different way than what she would have wished. Like it happened to so many others.. -
I think he is singing abt a girl who perhaps down upon him cz she was a star at that time...and she didnt make it bt he did so the dude is just throwing it all on her face.....bt looking at the video it's talking at a girl who was talented so much and won awards bt she lost her way cz of fame it also titled All lost souls

Honestly I see this as a slap in the face to some arrogant girl who either hurt James or who had no interest in him as he tried to move up the celebrity ladder. Maybe she derided him for some reason but at the end of the day, it's not how you start but how you finish. He finished way ahead of her from a celebrity standpoint and now that he has made it, he throws in a sexual context saying that he will "ALLOW HER" to now GO DOWN on him,as he is the famous celeb now and people want his attention and not hers!!! He will now do her a favor and let her "favor him!"

When i was younger this was my favourite song. Later i forgot what it was called but just rememebered the first line of the chorus to help me find the song once again. When i found it, i clicked on lyrics too. Long story short, i found that this song isnt as sweet as i remember. It seems to have a double meaning here. I belive Annie was an ex who would boast about her talent but she has got nowhere and James is kinda saying "well your'e not as famous as me. haha. so what I'll do for you is I'll sing about you so then you'll become famous." James kinda throws back all the things that this girl said but i dont think he considers how this will play with Annie's confidence. But what really shocked me( i suppose, i dont know if thats the right word) was the last line of the chorus "will you go down on me" i take that to assume oral sex right but why would blunt put this into a song that is listened to by all types of people of all ages. I mean it just confirms the theory of a partener or bf/gf thing. News now: not my favourite song. kinda a let down. Annie is that great whore of babylon on the Bible. James Blunt just have already found out the name. She rides a beast whith seven heads and ten horns. Very long to go to know all the meaning that led to the name Annie. But, I believe James do so. Those Brittish people know exactly what the end of the days is. Some are just as presumptions, and doubt them because there are too many things. But this Annie name is even a nick name if the real whore. So, don't bother. As I said, James knows it very well.

I think he is talking about a girl he used to know named Annie who always wanted to be famous and didn't have any talent. She tried to make it but she didn't and now James is singing about her to make this girl famous

Sadly, I can't say that James is really being very "in love" or even romantic in this song - more arrogant I suppose. He sings about a girl he must have known when they were younger who might have acted as though she were destined for greatness and James who obviously had talent too she didnt think would be as great."I thought you said you'd be a celebrity several years ago" She might have gained some fame but would have lost it not long after, "I thought I saw your photograph in a magazine having such a laugh" "They said you were a star to be in the NME". He also sings that she "practiced her autograph but no ones asked" as if to say she's not reached a very well known level of fame so instead he's singing about her painting her flaws and arrogance out to everyone, "And all the world will know your name, And you'll be famous as you are coz I'll sing for you." All in all not one of his kindest songs but definately one of his best. Amongst Goodbye my lover and Your Beautiful.

I think annie was a girl that used him to become famous...like a model or something and he is singing about how she did him wrong...and how now that he's singing about her everyone knows her as the user she really is. good for him haha I love James Blunt
