John Denver was an ardent environmentalist, and a great admirer of the French marine biolgist Jacques Cousteau. The song "Calypso" is a tribute to Cousteau and his crew.

The song sings the praises of Cousteau and his men, who did the world a huge service by showing us all the richness of undersea life.

Cousteau's ship was named the Calypso, after a sea nymph in Homer's "Odyssey."
