Going off to the vietnam war, doesn't know when he'll be back to her.

Because this song became a hit for Peter, Paul & Mary during the Sixties, it was widely assumed that the song's narrator was a soldier going off to Viet Nam.
In reality, it's a song about a musician heading out on the road for a long tour. He's about to take a taxi to the airport, and is saying goodbye to his girlfriend. He tells her how much he loves her and how much he's going to miss her. He dmits that he's cheated on her during past tours, but vows to be faithful this time, and promises to marry her as soon as he returns.
