I think summertime sadness is about when you go away on holiday, for example, and you have a romantic love fling and you lose all your sense of inhibition and 'live for the moment'. You want to be in that moment forever and you forget who you are. But when you return home, you are back in reality and you have the summertime sadness because it was all a holiday romance, a great spontaneous love you've had to let it go...it feels almost like a 'death', grieving for that summer romance.

This song really hits my feels. I did see the video, but I don't believe it is about a lesbian relationship. I do believe that it is a relationship though. I feel that her loved one is about to commit suicide and that she wants to spend the most time she can with them. She has the 'summertime sadness' because sometimes, if you have no plans, then the summer can be really boring, and you have a lot if time to think. Sometimes, we think so much that we get depressed.
I also agree with the possibility of her missing her best friend, but then 'kiss me hard before you go' is kinda out of place. -

Literally, reffering to the video clip - it might be about a lesbian relationship and when one of girls died because of suicide the other one reminds their common memories. That's the easiest and the most obvious way to interpretate this great song.
But personally, I'd rather say it's about losing best friend and missing this person because we stil remember how much fun we had together. Summertime is also holiday time and sometimes, when we don't see people for longer, they may change even if it's the last thing we want. Suicide motive and verse ''I just wanted you to know
That baby you're the best'' may mean that it's not our fault that we lost our best friend and we did everything to avoid it. It's like you just can't accept he/she changed - just don't recognize our old best friend in this person. We only remember old good days.

It's like: I will always remember all the stuff we used to do but I think we still can be friends, if you want it. But if not, I just will go on. But I will always miss all good times, I'll never forget you.
You may say that verse ''Kiss me hard before you go'' makes this song more about relationship and this interpretation is also right.
Anyway I interpretate it as a song about losing friend, maybe because I had same experience and this song clearly describes it. -
I'm a senior in high school, so for me, and possibly many others in my position, this song has a unique meaning. Myself and many of my friends have long term, and some short term relationships, but almost all will soon come to a sad ending when most of us go to college. Some will leave their significant other behind if they are a year or two younger, and others will simply go their separate ways in life, to different colleges. The coming summer will be fun, but there will also be a great sadness, hence "Summertime Sadness" because almost all the couples I know myself included know our relationships regardless of how good they are are ticking closer to a close. I myself am seeking ways to make as many positive memories with my girlfriend before I go away. I can imagine our last kiss and the line "kiss me hard before you go" makes perfect sense...

My interpretation of the song was that she had fallen in love, was separated from this person, through life/death situation and not even her "bad baby" could replace this person, no matter how bad they were, or the love she felt for this person she lost. Great singer
