#1 top rated interpretation:This is an obvious autobiography of Lana's life but I think there is another hidden message to it...
Think about the chorus "This is what makes us girls
We don't stick together 'cause we put our love first" --> it basically means that girls, in general, when you're young and 'fall in love' you put them before anyone else because they become everything to you. She is talking about society as a whole and how girls put love before their real true friends because sometimes their true friends aren't real..
I think it is also about how girls are effected badly by heartbreak and it is something which happens to everyone --> "lana how I hate those guys" --> young girls can easily be led on and think they can cope with things but when it comes to it, they can't.
This is just my interpretation and I could go on for hours about this song because it is so powerful and has so many messages and so much meaning. -

#2 top rated interpretation:The song is about not just Lana but a group of friends who were all looking for love in all of the wrong places and drank when ever it didnt work out which caused a series of unfortunate events. And while they were with the guys they still got into trouble anyway. Basically it all ends with Lana being sent away from her friends even though they were all she really had. So you never know whether or not her friends got over the crazed state they were in or not.
It is actually such a beatifully written song and one of my favorites by lana 3rd on my list compared to Radio and Without you. -

#3 top rated interpretation:I find the line, "Lana, how I hate those guys" particularly interesting. To me it suggests the idea that perhaps this girl was either sexually assaulted, or was convinced to have sex with a guy, and then he left her because he got what he wanted. I've seen this happen a lot to girls as I was growing up. I also agree with everyone else about the story behind the rest; wild and crazy teen experiences that got her sent to private school, and let her feeling like she's never had friends as close to her as they were. It's such an amazing song, well written, and a glimpse into what the teen years can be like for some girls.

I just read the lyrics to this song. She and her friends thought they were invincible, drinking and running from police. They spent so much time together and bonded, but they dove too deep and she got sent to a separate place to stop being influenced by bad choices.

it's obviously about a group of very, very, very close friends but the group breaks up because they put their boyfriends first before their friends. it's basically this:

Hmm I was just reading the interpretation of Off to the Races, which is about Lana's love for alcohol. Couldn't it be that this song is also about her love for alcohol, and not so much boys?

I think Lana had tried to said how friends could be everything for you then something happens maybe a new love and everything ends its about her teenage years when of course every girl put her love first.

This line makes me think she was a stripper or prostitute also how she refers to there "boss" -
"We don't stick together 'cause we put our love first" Makes me feel like there is more to the story than just partying and living the life. I feel like there is some sort of another story about her friend betraying her because of a guy that she does not tell. Anyone has any thoughts about that?

Definitely an autobiography, i love this song and it reminds me of being 16 and partying and making mistakes while trying to find someone to love me. It's a bittersweet memory thinking about friends that never got away from that lifestyle, this reminds me of them

She did not get sent to rehab. She got sent to private school

She was an alcoholic girl who was living life with a bunch of girlfriends, but then she gotsent away to rehab and this is when it goes quiet and she says; "they were the onl thing I ever had..." such an amazing song

In my opinion it is a sad way to tell the story of a broken friendship, I had to cry when I heard the song the second time and she sang "thats where the beginning where the end begun" <3 ldr.

This song is basically a 100% accurate autobiography of Lana as a young, troubled teenager who was living the life of a young, alcoholic hopeless romantic. The only thing that meant more to her than living the life was falling in love.
