Over The Hills And Far Away Lyrics

Hey Lady--you got the love I need
Maybe, more than enough.
Oh Darling Darling Darling, walk a while with me
Oh you've got so much...

Many times I've loved - Many times been bitten
Many times I've gazed along the open road.

Many times...

When I interpret lyrics, I never feel like I am digging very deep into the meaning. I will try to do so here, but hear with me.

Hey Lady--you got the love I need
    Maybe, more than enough

Assuming that Robert Plant wrote these lyrics, I assume that he wrote this line for his wife, or perhaps his daughter (he has a line about her in "The Ocean" from the same album).

Many times I've loved - Many times been bitten
Many times I've gazed along the open road.

"Many times I've loved" contains no metaphor, "Many times been bitten" quite obviously is a metahpor for Plant's heart being broken many times in the past. "Gazed along the open road" is a metaphor for realizing that the love is gone and moving on is now the thing to do.

Many times I've lied - Many times I've listened
Many times I've wondered how much there is to know.

These lines are pretty straightforward, "Many times I've lied - Many times I've listened" reflecting on how we all do wrong and right in our lives. "Wondered how much there is to know" referring specifically to the pursuit of knowledge being unlimited but perhaps trivial and unimportant. Perhaps this can be taken in a broader sense as one can always self-improve but how do you judge what improvement is and where it ends so why get too over involved in it?

Many dreams come true and some have silver linings
I live for my dream and a pocketful of gold.

These lines don't fit in with the rest of my interpretation, and you would have to know Robert Plant personally to know what "my dream" is referring to, and I'm sure "pocketful of gold" is a metaphor for something over than hitting it rich (which he did, but I'm sure it wasn't a priority for him).

Mellow is the man who knows what he's been missing
Many many men can't see the open road.

I'm not sure what Plant was thinking about when he wrote this line but I almost think its a little bit of commentary about how we should do what makes us happy. You can know you are missing something and be perfectly happy because maybe its not all its cracked up to be.

In its whole, I think this song is about the importance of finding love and happiness and not being a afraid of going on a journey to find those things. Don't get caught up in trivial things because nobody is perfect and at the end of the day, love and happiness are the things that matter.

The whole song is about the one ring from Lord of the Rings.

Actually i kno from experience, "Love" is symbolic for being possessed by a demon in the rock n roll world.. and be bitten im sure is the possession when not being invited.. you feel pins and needles all threw your heart when they enter you body, and a stange burning/aching sensation all over other than the same pins and needle tingle in your heart. Most rock bands sing about this phenomena and the strange visions of hell you travel to as they escape by using your body.. But i promise you, these guys ONLY sing about it. Id persume this song is about the other dimensional traveling these Fallen Angels take you too.. this demon in particular who fully wrote stairway is a very very beautiful creature as well as a scary one. I personally adore her feet that look like 2 dog paws, and she has a face that no human woman will ever have it is beautiful. At only about 4 feet tall, she is what we would call a "Grey Alien" today, and could easily over power the strongest man. These things are very real, and very satanic, as well as Zeppelin..

This interpretation has been marked as poor. view anyway

I think the first interpretation was pretty much spot on. Over the Hills and Far Away is the third song on the album Houses of the Holy. To me it sounds almost Spanish flemenco in style. To me the song represents searching for love, and of conquering one's dreams. There is even mention of the man who has missed this opportunity.

This song was written when page and plant were "holidaying" in wales creating their 4th album. The song title and many of the lyrics referring to their ancient residence deep in the hills of wales.
