Linkin Park: Rebellion Meaning

Album cover for Rebellion album cover

Song Released: 2014

Rebellion Lyrics

I've seen the blood
I've seen the broken
The lost and the sights unseen
I want a flood
I want an ocean
To wash my confusion clean

I can't resolve this empty story
I can't repair the damage done

We are the fortunate ones
Who've never...

I believe this song is about how this western modern generation never experienced an actual rebellion, or big changes in society.

    "I've seen the blood
    I've seen the broken
The lost and the sights unseen"

This can be about we see all the wars and rebellions around the world on TV and on the internet.

    "I want a flood
    I want an ocean
    To wash my confusion clean"

So you see all these people fighting all over the world for things they believe in. But we, this modern generation, don't have anything that we believe in so much, that we would rebel. We are confused about this swarm of ideas and ideologies that we have. You would need an "ocean to flood" (a big change in society) to wash away all these beliefs, so you can really believe in something. Because without that, we feel empty ("I can't resolve this empty story/I can't repair the damage done").

    "We are the fortunate ones
    Who've never faced oppression's gun
    We are the fortunate ones
    Imitations of rebellion"

This is pretty obvious: in the chorus he states, that altough we are without these strong beliefs, we are fortunate, because we are not facing dictatorship like many other countries. And we are only imitating rebellion, we really have no idea what being in a real rebbelion is like.

    "We acted out
    We wear the colors
Confined by the things we own"

Here he says, that we only act like we're rebels, wear the colors of rebellion (a good example for this are the Che Guevara T-shirts). But really, we are not rebels, we live in the modern society, and we are "Confined by the things we own".

    "We're not without
    We're like each other
    Pretending we're here alone"

Here again, we only pretend to have problems, we have a good life, we are not alone, we really don't have to rebel for anything. And while we create our little pretend-rebbelions here's what happens elsewhere:

"And far away they burn their buildings
Right in the face of the damage done"

So I think this song is about that this generation never experience a rebellion only via TV and internet, so we create our little fake rebellions, while in other places of the Earth they're really killing each other in rebellions.

I believe it's for the Armenian genocide where turkey slaughtered tens of thousands of Armenians on the borders killing over 2000000 people over half of the children . Because it's done with Daron Malakian who is Armenian . And every year the Armenians march demanding justice ( the rebellion) . Whole the turk cowards don't even pay for the pain they have caused

I think it says we are lucky to face such harsh experiences those people lived in our past, but we all are results of a rebellion. They faced the crudeness of rebelling and we are now just enjoying what they acquired for us.

first I heard this I thought it was kind of making fun of the modern US Tea Party. But I also find it can be an actual assessment of youth culture. They're rebelling against pretty much nothing.
