Swingin Party Lyrics

Bring your own lampshade, somewhere there's a party
Here it's never endin', can't remember when it started
Pass around the lampshade, there'll be plenty enough room in jail

If bein' wrong's a crime, I'm serving forever
If bein' strong's...

Lyrics are always open to personal interpretation. However, this writer is well known for his clever, poetic use of words and clichés.

Back in the day it was a cliché to show the life of the party wearing a lampshade. The writer shows a clever use of words to take the lyrics from a swinging party to actual hanging. Wanting to be strong but needed help with a feather shows vulnerability.

This song is from the Replacement's "TIM" album. "TIM" is one of the greatest rock albums ever and includes other great songs such as ( Bastards of Young / Waitress in the Sky / Here comes a Regular).

That's actually a song by The Replacements. Lorde's cover is a decent one but the original has a melancholy which can't be touched. Paul Westerberg is one of the greatest and most underrated songwriters in recent history and I encourage you to explore the entire Replacements catalog as well as Westerberg's solo work.
Now, what is "Swingin' Party' about?
Paul Westerberg has spoken about this song quite a bit and said its about a few different things. It's about what it seems to be about superficially, yes, but also touches on times when you (the generic you) are so uncomfortable in social situations that you (the generic you again) need to self-medicate with alcohol and fake happiness to make your way through the Swingin Party.
He said the band needed to do this often with respect to performing. They were all incredibly uncomfortable getting on stage and drank...a lot...before shows. It's a relatable concept for people who have social anxiety or stage freight. They may not use substances but many people have coping mechanisms, calming techniques, and yes, substances, which help them in uncomfortable situations.
It's about depression, losing yourself in a crowd, hiding in plain sight, sadness and longing disguised as joy. It's about whatever you need it to be about. It's songwriting at its finest.
"Bring your own lampshade, somewhere there's a party."

Lorde talks about doing things wrong "If being wrong is a crime..." "If being afraid is a crime...". Then she talks about the consequences "Then I'm serving for ever..." She went to jail. "We hang side by side..." I think this means they were hung and killed. "At the swinging party down the line" they are being hung and punished. I think this song might be about world war 1 because she sings "I need help here with this feather", in WW1 the white feather represented the men who were to much of cowards to be in the war, it was kind of like a shame. I think that the people she's singing about were too afraid to be in the war and are now being punished. I don't know what the "Bring your lampshade..." means, I'm guessing that they are trying to hide or blend in.

This interpretation has been marked as poor. view anyway
