    Cherry red refers to virginity, midnight blue refers to sex. I think his father was saying, life is divided between the time when you were a virgin and the time when you had your first sexual encounter.

    I am a little perplexed by these lyrics..just a little. He sings "into the midnight blue" which obviously means into the unknown..but not totally black..blue..an unknown future..but not completely dark..and we all must face the future..the darkness with the light within us..the midnight blue!! But I have to admit..I dunno what he means when he sings "..my father said its simple..life is either cherry red..or midnight blue". Maybe a "cherry red" life is a life with no mystery, no chances...no darkness to venture into with your light and your love and your talents and..and...ok...i said enough! I LOVE THIS SONG!!
