Marilyn Manson: Godeatgod Meaning

Album cover for Godeatgod album cover

Godeatgod Lyrics

Dear god do you want to tear your knuckles down
And hold yourself

Dear god can you climb off that tree
Meat into the shape of a 'T'

Dear god the paper says you were the King
In the black limousine

Dear John and all the King's...

A sinister opening to the album. Listening closely, you may hear the opening/closing of prison doors. The scene is hence created; a prisoner being led to his death (execution). Along the 'walk' he is, "contemplating things from the Death Valley, which is a metaphor for the outcast and the imperfect of the world."

"Dear god do you want to tear your knuckles down and hold yourself
Dear god can you climb up that tree, meat in the shape of a 'T'
Dear god the paper says you were the King in the black limousine"

The ensuing metaphor is initially outlined here, in the scaffolding sense; an introduction. The 'black limousine' is that of JFK's - a modern Christ-like figure. The "Meat in the shape of a 'T'" is symbolic of Christ's crucifixion. The meat is the flesh.

"Dear god if you were alive you know we'd kill you"

In Manson's views, the sentiments which Christ expressed throughout his time on earth, have since been manipulated by man - twisted to represent something different. "Christ's words, teachings and image were taken after his death and turned into something that he probably wouldn't have supported if he were alive."
    "Before the bullets
    before the flies
before authorities take out my eyes
the only smiling are you dolls that I made
but you are plastic and so are your brains"

As the character entailed within the album has a dangerous opinion, he is hence victimized by an uncompromising society, that feeds upon conformity; and fear of the unknown more often than not leads to condemnation of that, which is different to the prosthetic 'norm'.
The 'dolls' are the members of society who are plastic-minded and superficial. These blind followers of Manson have been created, subconciously by he himself. As Christ had a devout following, so too does Manson.

Manson was imagining and visioning his own Perdicament of what was beginning to really happen to him in this world. With and by The Media that went on a wild witchunt for needing a Scapegoat like him to blame to the point of either to crucify him or burn him like a piece of steak. The Media was LOOKING for somebody to blame after what sadly happened to Our young loved ones in the unfortunate tragedy of Columbine High. That's when and why Manson went into this song. By assimilating the executions of OUR beloved John F. Kennedy and Martin Luther King, along with Their men that were all used symbologically in this song AS A MODERN DAY beheading of John the Baptist of the Bible and the coming Saviour Jesus Christ, who was crucified, along with Their Followers as known apostles that became Christ-conscious. Being in this kind of mindset where Manson was asking for a MEETING as GOD'S help to come down if HE could. In order to help us all, but if He does he knows We will kill Him. In a similar way These Other Godly men that came in the name of Jesus Christ, only to be executed for our sins and by our sins. Anotherwords I think Manson is trying to say, no matter which way you ''Shift That LOG'' over, forwanting the Love Of God to come your way and to find somekind of meat to eat, the more ''The Story Remains The Same''. But the FACES of Good and Evil always change with our circumstances in this ''Dog eat Dog'' world of ours.

    Great song, Great Album

This is the first song on the album and as such it sets the stage for the rest of the album but letting us know what the album is actually about.
"Dear god do you want to tear your knuckles down and hold yourself? Dear God do you want to climb off that tree and meat in the shape of a T?"
Like all great artist Manson does not only point out the problems of modern society but also offers a solution.

this album, as with all his albums, at one of the deepest levels is about astral projection. The tree he's asking if YOU (you are your own God) want to climb down from is your body, hence, "meat in the shape of a 'T'". 'Meat' is also a pun for 'Meet' so this lyric is also asking you if you want to meet in the shape of a T. The letter 'T' is a symbol of two intersecting planes in occult symbolism it would be the physical world intersecting with the astral world so it is used as a symbol for astral projection, This is from "The Key To It All Volume 2: The Western Mysteries" By David Allen Hulse.
It is no secret that Manson is a well versed student of the occult and has literally PACKED all his albums with his occult knowledge. As a matter of fact the three occult worlds of the human being is: The physical body, The mind and the spirit, these are represented by Manson with his three albums of the Tryptich-

Holy Wood= The physical body, 'Holy' 'Wood' is flesh.
    Mechanical Animals= The human mind
    Anti-Christ Superstar= The Human Spirit

I always thought the beginning of this song was someone cocking a gun. It would be fitting seeing how the album ends, besides that, I agree with the first person.

I think what it is about is how stupid humanity is. Everyone has conformed to the system that in a way in now just designing us all, packaging us and shipping us out to work school etc. We are products, and now gods image is that of a celebrity, a person who conforms to the greatest extent such as a president and a religous one at that. Religion is the opiat of the masses It is something watered down and force fed to us just like our one sided education. We are those little model airplanes you can buy in a store and out education is the instruction manual. There is already an image of what we are supposed to look like or how we are supposed to be right there on the cover. We are to the government what these models are to us.

This interpretation has been marked as poor. view anyway

It's the first song on the "Holywood" album and foreshadows many of the themes and metaphors of the rest of the songs. The "tree...in the shape of a 'T'" is an obvious reference to the crucifixion. "Dear John" and the "black limousine" refers to the Kennedy assassination. These are all common Manson themes. I think Holywood was a reclamation of his earlier success.

My favorite lines in this song are in the refrain though, "Before the bullets, before the flies....". Holywood is Manson's vehicle for commentary on the militarization of American society, and its effects on civil society. This album is his response to the Columbine massacres.

The methodical musical buildup and lyrical arrangement set a very dark foreboding tone for this album (contrast this with the immediate drum assault on the live version of Irresponsible Hate Anthem on "AntiChrist", or the pop-synth beginning on "Great Big White World"). This is Manson at his best and the song leads seamlessly into the rest of the album. These lyrics are pretty straightforward, perhaps most contentious would be "The only smiling are you dolls that I made But you are plastic and so are your brains."

I interpret this to be tongue-in-cheek. I don't think Manson is taking seriously the idea that he's putting ideas into the heads of the fan base. In fact, in lieu of the lyrics in the rest of the album, he seems to be arguing exactly the opposite.
