i think it is about this boy who is in love with his friend, but this girl has a boyfriend (thus to line "she always belonged to someone else) I really can relate to this song, because I have this good friend of mine, who is always there for me, and I kind of like him, but on the other hand I have a boyfriend. and every time me and my boyfriend have a fight, or whenever I feel sad about something in my relationship I can talk to my friend, he comforts me, and really showes me love. That makes me want to stay with him. I feel safe in his arms.. I know I will be loved by him.. but it feel, or are scared to think of when everything in my relationship is kind of messed up, I want him back, (thus the line "comes back and makes me catch her every time she falls" )

the problems she has, I think is that she cannot make up her mind, whether she will stay with her boyfriend, or this friend of her that loves her so much. and this friend is alway there for her, no matter what, but she belongs to her boyfriend. I think the last line could mean that even how hard he tries, or even how good he is to her, she will always choose her boyfrien, that's "safe". but is she really happy with him anymore? "look for the girl with the broken smile"

when he droves for miles, it can mean that he is confused, he wants to get out of here, but in some way, he winds up at your door, this means that he love this girl so much, that he can't leave, because he want's her so badly.
he had her so many times, but as a friend! I think he won't kiss her and do things withe her, in respect for her relationship, but sometimes the feelings are taking control.. and he really wants more, he wants love.
( I recognize my self in this situation. This friend of mine cald hold me, and maybee kiss me on the forehead, but he won't go any longer because I have a boyfriend, and because, every time I am with him I am vulnerable, and could be kissing him for other reasons, "to feel that I am beeing loved" anyway, we have been kissing, and doing all the things, so again I have som problem withe my self (thus the second line "had some problems with herself") I don't know who I want to stay with, and it's hard because the safe thing is to forget this friend, and stay with your boyfriend.

he could sit in her backyard, in the worst wether, just looking into her window. and that is when he sees her broken smile, she is not happy, she is confused, and hurt, and wants to be loved, but can't be loved so much by her boyfriend, as she can by her friend. maybee her feelings is stronger for the friend. (thats kind of my dilemma aswell) the broken smile is allways there, trying to look happy around friends, nobody knows, except my friend, who likes me so much!

this means that she taps on his window, or she is alloud to do it whenever she feels for it. He will always comfort her, og just be hanging around with her. He want's her to feel good with herself, because he knows that she is not. but she may think that he is pushing himself away abit. and yes, he may tend insecure, because he knows that she will go back to her boyfriend again. That is what I feel too, about my friend. always when I think of ending my relationship, I get insecure of whether he will have me later or not.

im a bit unsure of these lines. It can mean that a relationship is not just glory. It has its bad days aswell, and living throu them, makes the people in the relationship stronger together. but it an also mean that this friend and the girl used to have much fun before,not thinking of getting more involved. now its compromise that moves them along. everything is up to this girl.. (again I see myself as this girl, it's so scary in a way) this friend has his herat open for her, and she can come whenever she wants. He gives her time.

(a car is a symbole that can mean a lot of things, but since she is hiding in it, it means that is safe being there, and that she is worshiping herself, or has to do it.
but this frien known that always when she leaves her boyfriend, she will go back to him, and in the meanwhile she'll go to her friend for love, and comfort.

the end of the song has a kind of doubble meaning.
he don't want her to try so hard to end the relationship, because he knows that she will retur again, and that mayby if they would get together (the girl and the friend) she wouldn't be abel to forget her ex-boyfriend.. but then he starts singing I don't mind spending everyday...." so he means this one thing, that she shuldn't say goodbye, but on the other hand he wants her for himself. because he loves her so much, he would do anything for her! -
It's actually about a guy loves his girlfriend, but his girlfriend's mother is really irrestible and is having marraige problems with her much older husband. He and her start an affair, and at the end they are caught by the girlfriend. The music video's really sad.

The song pretty much means that he loves a woman who belongs to another man. The song speaks about how much he loves her and what he can do for her.
The music video is about him falling in love with his girlfriends mother. The mother isn't receiving love from her husband. Truly the music video is more about her and her and how unhappy she is then about him. Though this video is a love story, it is also about betrayal. The mother betrayed her daughter by falling in love with her boyfriend. -
I've experienced this before... It's about 2 friends, One boy one girl, and the boy loves the girl to death and will always be there for her... The girl has an abusive boyfriend.. The boy is always there for her when she's down but when she's better she always goes back to the guy....
My experience was similar... I'm the guy pretty much... Met a girl... Fell in love... The girl "Said" she loved me too... but that was only because the guy she was in love with didn't like her... Then when he told her he likes her.. "Likes" not "Loves" she just leaves me in the dust and goes for him... I am truly disappointed that everyone seemed to miss the true interpretation of this ong. All you have to do is look at the music video and it explains it all...
First of all, there is guy dating his 18 year old girlfriend. The problem begins when the are all at a pool party and he notices her mom is looking for attention. Her husband doesn't pay attention to her and she just wants to be loved. She envies what her daughter has and the boyfriend shows interest in the mom. Finally, he sleeps with her and the song in all actuality is for the mom. He is saying that he wants to love her and be with her when she is feeling lonely and ugly. In the end, he makes it clear to everyone that he loves this woman.
On a more personal note, I absolutely hate this song and this video because it happened to me. My boyfriend left me for my mom in this very similar situation that the music video shows. It sucks. -

My fiance and I fell in love to this song and we were going to use it for our wedding song this summer...now after reading all your interpretations I am starting to think it's a bad idea. I guess it can mean what you want it to mean...or what it means to you.

The song meaning has a better interpretation through the video.
The video shows the mother of his girlfriend not getting attention from her husband. The mother then begins to flirt with other men which provokes the husband to get into an argument and beat her.
The main character (Adam) feels sorry and goes to comfort her, but they share a kiss and the next few scenes show Adam constantly watching for her and thinking about her.
At the end, the mother shows the same feelings for Adam, but she knows he is taken.
She becomes furious and storms off in front of him and his girlfriend, but he chases after her and shares a passionate moment while the girlfriend sees in blind sight.
The ironic ending is shown when *she will be loved* the mother finally finds love, but he breaks his girlfriend's heart in order to do it. -
This song is about a friend of his who has always been really insecure with herself and tries to get attention from other guys by throwing herself around. He's the only person who really cares about her but she doesn't feel the same and only comes back to him as a rebound guy. What I got from the video is that he eventually moves on with another girl and she becomes jealous and angry.

About two months ago, I was rereading the interpretations I had submitted for this song, and I came across one submitted by "anonymous". I read what she had to say about this song and I instantly realized the bone-head mistake that I had made in my own interpretations, which completely ignored the abusive boyfriend, and it made me think. This song, I have failed to see for about half a year now, is clearly about a boy who's in love with his best friend, but she doesn't like him that way and she has an abusive boyfriend.
I know that this website is here for song interpretation only, and I also know that some people will think I'm a dork, and others won't want my sympathy, but I don't care. I just wish to apologize if I hurt anyone out there who read my interpretations (especially the one with a random comment about the music video...). I feel awful about not seeing the real meaning of this song sooner, and I deeply regret submitting my previous interpretations, which failed to address the abusive boyfriend. And if anyone stays mad at me, I seriously don't blame you. I understand if you hate me, but I just want to let you know that I really am sorry for my mistake.
