Milk Of The Siren Lyrics

Drink from the leche of sirens,
summon the sailors in town
Strangle the fear of deciding
Which ones deserving to drown

Engraved in our memory,
the harm that was done
Our mothers, the witches,
they banished and burned
All of our sisters...

It’s about womens rights and feminism. It’s showing how womens we’re always put down since the start and even today with strictly religious countries like Iran and Afghanistan still not letting women have the most basic rights and even in developed countries like America who are banning abortion and what they do with their body, and how we should fight against it. The depiction of sirens is also (I’m not Ann expert in myths so correct me) how sirens probably used to be women who were beaten, raped, abused, killed, and oppressed by men as well as the witches who were burned at the stake so when they died they reincarnated as sirens who would lure those same men to their deaths, and Melanie is talking about the men that abuse and oppress women.

The song appears to be a call to arms for women to rise up and take control of their lives and destinies, and not to feel guilty or ashamed for doing so. It makes metaphors of women of the past having to remember they do not need to worry about which abusive sailor they drown, sending an overall message that encourages self defense. The lyrics also reference discriminatory history, such as the burning of accused women at stakes, or the colonization of innocents.
