I interpret it as someone who is suffering from a bad relationship with a once-caring person who has now became neglectful - recognising that she "once felt like home" -, and he has subsequently been tainted and tormented by this. He was desperate to help her, wanting to "light the darkness", because in his eyes he is hers - and she is aware of his love for her but uses it as a way to make him into her puppet (perhaps part of the Puppet Trilogy?). All the "love" that she gave him, and has in perhaps a new relationship with someone new, is just her way on trying to relieve her cravings and pain. I think the song explores his distress of the relationship, with him trying to help her but then her letting the darkness within consume her until she has became a totally different person.
