I don't know what you had in mind But here we stand on opposing sides Let's go to war Everything you say Everything yo do You push it in And you cut me down ...

A dysfunctional, perhaps verbal abusive couple. "We arm ourselves with the wrongs we've done." Many times in relationships people bring up past mistakes of the other in an argument and "name them off one by one" also, the fighting in your home, the place you should feel safe and secure. Making the person you care most about your enemy. "Screaming at the ones we love
Like we forgot who we can trust
Screaming at the top of our lungs
On the grounds where we feel safe
Do we feel safe? Do we feel safe?" It also talks about a baby. It is common for young couples to feel trapped in their circumstances and fight a lot when they feel they are there because they had a baby too early and are stressed out trying to raise and provide for it.

I think it's just as obvious as the lyrics, I think this song is is based off/about the Cold War which was between the USA and the Soviet Union

I feel the "Cold War" he is referring to is the subtle build up of thing over years that all explode out in the end. It's the idea that in a relationship, everything one does is like information gathering for the other, and if those things have a negative effect, then the bomb drops.

"I was going through the end of an eight-year relationship. I was dealing with some stuff, and I got off the phone, and I was angrier than I've ever been. I was never one to yell a lot or get into super-big, dramatic fights or anything like that; I'm pretty laid back. But I'd gotten to that point, was on the edge, and we had it out with each other over the phone, and I was just fuming. At the end of eight-years of stuff that had kind of built up – I looked at [guitarist] Mark [Vollunga], and I was like, 'Let’s get in the studio now! Play that guitar part you were playing yesterday.' And so Mark started to play it, and I just started singing stuff, and it was about 30 minutes later that the bulk of that song was done. So, some of them came out quick like that and were unusual for us."

I think this song has dual meaning. Based off the lyrics alone, I would agree this deals with people who love one another that are verbally combative and use past mistakes, safe spaces, etc to verbally assault one another. The idea of a "cold war" to wait it out can refer to taking space from one another to cool down another. When you take the music video into consideration, the man on the television seems to be giving a national speech and could be a reference to the political climate; where people act irrationally based on petty differences. Could explain why people in the bar who don't know one another begin fighting for no reason.

Could refer to the state of our country current state. Fighting amongst ourselves in the greatest nation on earth. I also would like to point out the Native American sounding melodies and drums throughout. Isn't it great that we use songs to interpret what we are feeling internally? That we can express ourselves freely on whatever is relevant to us...maybe some of the protesters on this or that these days need to sit back and listen to good music. They might be a happier lot...just sayin...
