Home Lyrics

So long I've been waiting
To let go of myself and feel alive
So many nights I thought it over
Told myself I kind of liked her
But there was something missing in her eyes

I was stumbling, looking in the dark
With an empty heart
But you...

This song, to me, is clearly about struggling with your sexuality and finding someone to rely on through all of this. The first verse uses female pronouns, and talks about trying to fit in, to tell yourself you like "her", but it never feels right, you don't feel alive. After this, the song is gender neutral, and talks about finding someone but wondering if you two are enough. A later verse answers the first part about something missing in "her" eyes, saying "I see the smile as it starts to creep in/It was there, I saw it in your eyes". It's a beautiful song.

Louis is an incredible lyricist and this song is a beautiful example of this.
Well, this is about freedom to love.
The narrator makes it clear in the first stanza: "so long I've been waiting
To let go of myself and feel alive "

Here it tells us that the person hid his feelings for a long time, especially for himself.
Loving makes him alive, soon he does not feel truly happy and full hiding it.

"Told myself I kind of liked her
But there was something missing in her eyes "

In the same stanza he confesses that he tried to fall in love with someone else - in the "she" case - but could not because he was not genuine. The use of the pronouns in this song are primordial, because this resource tells us the story.

I was stumbling, looking in the dark
    With an empty heart
    But you say the same
    Could we ever be enough?
Baby we could be enough "

This whole point becomes too personal, the narrator is no longer talking to a third person, but directly to someone.
Here we see a romantic promise, that everything will be all right, for both are enough for each other.
Despite the difficulties, they will continue fighting.
Well, love is forbidden. You only make promises of this kind if something or someone hinders you.

    And it's alright
Calling out for somebody to hold tonight
    When you're lost, you'll find a way
    I will be your light
You'll never feel like you're alone
I'll make this feel like home "

Then the chorus, the narrator changes to neutral pronouns and continues to use the game of driving in the third person vs. talking directly to someone else.
He says "and its alright" as a consolation and also as something to be strong.
I feel that the first few verses are a message to the listener. (I know louis, you can love anyone you want.)

Then comes the great phrase of effect of the song: "I'll make this feel like home."
Home is a metaphor, the person you love is your home and your destination.
He will always come back to the person and feel welcomed.
This metaphor fits perfectly in the context of the story, for usually your home is the one you feel most secure and no matter how hard you try to live elsewhere, "your home" will always be the primary choice.

So hot i could not take it
I want to wake up and see your face
And remember how good it was last night
    Still with a little feeling
I see the smile as it starts to creep in
It was there, I saw it in your eyes "

    Ok, this is totally WOW
Because as I said, the pronouns that tell all the great thing happens.
This stanza the narrator is finally in the arms of whom he loves, but since it is a forbidden love, he regrets not being able to have so much space and time to love him in the way that he so much wants.
    (It breaks my heart, actually)
But it ends with an answer to the first stanza of the song saying "it was there, I saw it in your eyes"
He uses "you", is not "her" and yes, another person.
    Him maybe? Can be.
The fact is that the narrator gave himself to the one he really loves, even with all the barriers preventing him.

I know the rumors about Louis and definitely this song is a letter to fans and a promise to whom he loves, in this case, Harry.
Louis wanted to demonstrate in the best way that he knows his anguish in loving and not being able to express this love freely: in music.
If your fans did not understand, I'm sorry, but it's so obviuos.

Ps: sorry my bad grammar, english is not my mother tongue :(

What I believe Louis is trying to say in this song is that after being with that he didn’t actually like, he found another person that he could connect and love. Someone he could make feel like home.
In the verse “told myself I kinda liked her, but there was something missing in her eyes”, I believe he is literally talking about a girl he was with. Louis is describing a girl that he made himself like, but he didn’t see any future with: in this case, Elouner.
Eventually he found another person that made him feel, a person he could connect with(now using neutral pronouns), and he now thinks that maybe that person is the one: in this case, Harry. Louis wants to give his all to this person. He wants to make them safe and accompanied, like you would feel in a...ahem...HOME.❤️

I see it as finally finding someone who feels the struggle that you do with love and you just hope that love between you will be enough to overshadow any challenges. Maybe this person isn’t the one you or your family/friends had in mind for you and you tried to like someone else, hence why it said ‘told myself I kinda like her.’

This song is probably one of the best ever written by Louis. It expresses so much emotion and tells such a clear story. Tbh I can’t think of what else home could be about other than Larry...

this song is the Larry anthem, Louis wrote this and got emotional.
The song sounds like a phone conversation between Harry and Louis with Harry saying "could we ever be enough, baby we could be enough" and at the end Louis says "ill make this feel like home". Also key part with the song starting with a she "Told myself I kind of liked her
But there was something missing in her eyes" then it switches to gender neutral when Louis sings "I see the smile as it starts to creep in
It was there, I saw it in your eyes."

To me this song is about wanting to be alive and trying to find someone you're easily connected to when Niall sings the verse "told myself I kinda liked her but there was something missing in her eyes" it's talking 'bout how we all seen that one person we can't get off our minds. Then in comes the pre chorus saying "I was stumbling looking in the dark with an empty heart" the focous person doesn't have to see the core in someone's eyes just to be there home. Second verse talks about longing "wanna wake up and see your face and remember how good it was being here last night" Louis follows up by saying "I see that smile that starts to creep in, it was there I saw it in your eyes" something that wasn't found in 'her' eyes is there now the song ends clear and strong by giving a repeated message "I'LL MAKE THIS FEEL LIKE HOME". Hoped I helped
