Okay. This song is simply about a good, catholic, virgin. She has a job, but is not making enough money to support herself and possibly a family. She decides to take a job at a law firm, however the lawyer decides he will only hire the woman if she sleeps with him. They meet at a dirty hotel and do the deed, which the lawyer refers to his wife as meeting on strictly business. However, after the lawyer leaves the woman at the hotel, a policeman comes and is going to arrest the woman. The catch- if she sleeps with him as well, she's off the hook.
As for the "There are no raindrops on roses and girls in white dresses." They are saying that she lost her virginity to this horrible, cheating, lawyer. "It's sleeping with roaches and taking best guesses." Means that she slept with these people because she guessed it would be the best thing for her to do, so she could do to get the money/job, and not go to jail. "The shade of the sheets before all the stains." refers to her life before she had sex, and "A few more of your least favorite things" is used to describe that worse things are being done. -
It seems that a lawyer and a "virgin" are "occupying" a room in a rather rundown hotel. This lawyer then goes back home, unaware that the "virgin" is actually moonlighting as a prostitute to expose the corruption of his practices, "fixing her face in a compact," suggesting that she could be a journalist. However, as she finishes cleaning herself up, a cop shows up and startles her, causing her things to go flying about to reveal a used condom, "a purse of a different kind". The whole story reveals there were no "virgins" just liars that stain the sheets more than anything else could.

first of all, the girl isnt pregnant. purse of a different kind means drug bags. shes in a whorehouse. shes a whore. shes not getting no job. he tells his wife shes getting a job there so he can "interview her" the virgin is to represent her actual innocence in the game he plays with his wife, she has no idea what he's telling his wife.

For the most part the first one is right. I do not think the "purse" is a baby though. At first I also thought that th "virgin" was a prostitute but then I decided I was not being literal enough. There is also the terrible crash and I do believe that in the end the sleeps with the constiple because it says "And the constiple and his proposition..." even though she isn't a hooker what proof does he have? So she says what the heck and does the un-Christian thing. Also the constiple in a sense might be gods "punishment" for the lawyer which in a way, would make sense for the title. So now she IS a prostitute. See what I'm saying?

Okay, pretty much I'm thinking this story is about humankind and how totally crappy we all are. It's about four awful people.
The story starts in a sleazy motel where a lawyer has shacked up with his bit on the side for the night. He's just using her for sex, and she just wants a high-paying job at the law firm. The lawyer's wife knows about it but even though she's a hooker by night (moonlighting) she will stay with the lawyer because she needs his money. I'd say he met his wife in a similar way that he met his new girl...
Out goes the lawyer and a cop is passing by. The slutty girl is not looking where she is going (she's fixing her face in a compact) and she bumps into the cop. She "spills her purse and her bag" and out of her bag falls a packet of cocaine etc. (a 'purse' of a different kind...) To keep the cop quiet she sleeps with him as well.
The "Least Favourite Things" verse is saying, well, this is how things are. Life isn't like 'raindrops and roses and girls in white dresses.' Life can be complete shit.
NB: After writing this, I remembered that prostitution is illegal in the US. Perhaps the slut was also a hooker, and what fell out of her bag was her ill-gotten gains of the night. -

This is by far my favorite song on the album. This basically tells a story in itself.
It's about a virgin that needs a job from an attorney and to get the job she has to sleep with him. after the attorney had left the hotel room, a constable came in and in exchange for not arresting her he had to sleep with her. while making love she dropped her purse and illegal drugs and a black book or "a purse of a different kind". This song was written to show how love and intimacy nowadays are totally fake and is bringing shame to prostitution and mimed relationships. The "there are no raindrops on roses..."part shows that most relationships are fake. "sleeping with roaches" means sleeping with people who don't love you, "taking best guesses" means risking having an std or another ordeal, and "add a few more of your least favorite things" ties it into the Sound Of Music reference and shows that those are only a few examples of terrible outcomes of mimed relationships and overall premarital sex. -
I think that the "substandard motels on the corner of 4th and Fremont street" are run-down motels that people can rent for a night to have sex. I think that the lawyer forces all his employees to have sex with him, but he tells his wife that it's "strictly business" and she doesn't know. But the girl this is about isn't like the other ones and she's a catholic virgin.
I think that the "terrible crash" is the lawyer having sex with her and "spilling her purse" could be sort of like symbolism for losing her virginity. I think that the "purse of a different kind" is that she got pregnant with the lawyer's child.
The girl had to have sex with the lawyer since she was going to work for him and she was poor and really needed money, so she had no choice.
The "raindrops on roses and girls in white dresses" could mean that she won't be able to get married now. So there won't be any girls in white dresses and she could be crying while looking at roses that could've been a bouqet.
"It's sleeping with roaches and taking best guesses" could be that she has babies or "roaches" inside her womb that she has to live with, but she's not sure if she's pregnant at the time so she's "taking best guesses."
The "shade of the sheets before all the stains" could mean that her life was clear and she had a bright future ahead of her and the "sheets" meaning her path, was clear. But now the lawyer got her pregnant so that "stained" the sheets, meaning it caused problems and now she can't have the future she could've had before. Then the last part, "and a few more of your least favorite things" could be that the girl is now depressed and doesn't really like anything anymore, since her life got ruined.

Ok so what I understand is that the lawyer meets the virgin at the show. The lawyer is married to the mrs. and he cheats on her with the virgin... That's what I understand! and then I think the caricature of intimacy is between the lawyer and the virgin, or the lawyer and the mrs... make sense? I don't know, that's just my guess, if I'm wrong please tell me!

So I'm thinking that Brendon is just being sarcastic, since intimacy means "close friendship", which the couple certainly does not have. So apparently later on his wife found out he was cheating on her because she found another purse that was not hers.
