    Contrary to many others who have posted, I dont think this song should be viewed as a story. It appears to literally be a dream, with surrealist movement between subjects, rather than just a narrative about a relationship.

    P@TD frequentley use imagery to create a scene in the listeners head, and the bizare lyrics are an example of this.

    The title of the song could be referring to crying, as North is often associated with up. "Northern downpour sends its love" therefore suggests that the subject once spent a period of time crying alot, but has moved on.

    The lyrics have been written very ambiguously, so that each of us can take our own personal meanings from them, which is what has made it such a popular song, particularly with those of us who are carrying sorrow.
    However, I'm fairly sure that "she clicked her heels and wished for me" is a direct reference to the wizard of oz, "she" wishes to be with the narator, and so is reenacting the actions taken by dorothy to go home.

    Anyway, lots of thing in there which I feel have certain meanings, but I wouldnt wish to impose those meanings on others who already have a personal interpretation of the song :)

    ValentynBrightside, I believe the weathervane part has something to do with going a different direction in life/relationship. I agree with you on the rest.

    It's about taking it all for granted, and having to enjoy the simple pleasures in life and excepting the world isn't a lovely place but it is still beautiful.

    Honestly the amount of times I've listened to this song is unreal and honestly I still don't understand the main meaning to this song.
    The first verse is about how if life is/were just a dream then diamonds are pointless and therefore have the same value as broken glass and jewellery should just be thrown into the sea as it also has no value.

    "i missed your skin when you were east" maybe about missing someone who is on the east coast etc etc I know the worlds a broken bone, but melt your headaches call it home - even though the world is "broken" and crap sometimes it's still home
    "you are at the top of my lungs, drawn to the ones who never yawn" - always talking about that one person; they're always in your dreams and therefore you don't yawn.

    I've read a lot of really good interpretations of this song about how it's about girlfriends and stuff and although that is what ryan ross said it was about I think this song has a much deeper meaning. When brendon urie recently sang this he started crying...it could be because he missed ryan and jon but why only in this song? he also said that he had cried all the other days on tour when he sung this song. The line he was unable to finish was "i know the world's a broken bone, but melt your headaches call it home"
    personally I think there is a deeper meaning; I just have no idea what it is :/

    Am i the only one who can see the intertextual referencing of

    I think that this song, just has such deep lyrics first off.

    Personally, I think this song is just about life, and our modern world, and things society as a whole has forgotten about.

    "We should feed our jewelry to the sea. For diamonds do appear to be, just like broken glass to me" This is obviously refering to how our modern world holds on too much to material things and should let all of that stuff go.

    "The ink is running towards the page, its chacing off the days" This is showing how in life, if you don't embrace the world, time slips away from you.

    "I missed your skin when you were east, you clicked your heels and wished for me" This is talking about how finding love is a wonderful thing, and no matter the distance between you and your love, you should never, let them go.

    Although there are many other messages in this song, these are the main one I found.

    it's so funny, the other day in my english class we had to do a journal on the prompt, "now or never." for some reason this song immediately came to mind. i then realized my brains connotations associated with this song; childhood and this generation. we're greedy, selfish and ungrateful of our world. we need to fix things now or never, because the moon is coming down.

    Some of the other interpretations listed above have picked out useful meanings of this song, and piecing them together with my views I've sort of managed to work out this song. Also, don't get confused by the alternated use of 'writer' and 'guy' as they are the same person, it would just sound same-y if I used the same word over and over at once.

    This is the writer saying if his life is just a dream, then he can throw away the material things that suggest 'bought happiness'. Since life seems like a dream, what more could one want?

    For diamonds do appear to be
    Just like broken glass to me

    This just supports the lyrics before, explaining that the writer doesn't see the beauty in bought objects, and they are worth just as much in the sea as in his hands. Broken glass also suggests that this material happiness is dangerous, and you must be cautious.

    In storms of fabled foreign tongues
    Tripping eyes, and flooded lungs
    Northern downpour sends its love

    'She' is referring to an ex girlfriend of the writer. This verse is saying that the girl believes in him, and doesn't believe that the right guy is hard to find, that it's not out of the ordinary to find someone perfect. She doesn't want to believe that amazing things come around rarely. Then it seems as if she has been proved wrong, and she's crying over losing one guy she found to be perfect. I think the guy is the Northern Downpour, because then it seems like a 'told-you-so' thing, where he's told the girl not to believe that finding love is easy and the northern downpour is her tears for him.

    This is where the writer doesn't want to wake up from the dream that is his life. He doesn't want to wake up to face what might come tomorrow. In his dreams, he can remember the girl, and he doesn't want to face knowing he doesn't have her anymore when he wakes up.

    I think 'sugarcane in the easy morning' is referring to how sweet (sugar) life is when he meets the girl at first, when first love is still fresh and new. The 'weathervanes my one and only' is the weathervane changing the position it's pointing, from summer and warmth, as the love sours, or lessens, and then goes away.

    It's chasin' off the days

    This is where the days are passing into weeks, into months as he's missing the girl. It seems the days go so slowly that he can count them as they end, and the time away from his love is drawn out.

    Look back at both feet
    And that winding knee
    I missed your skin when you were east
    You clicked your heels and wished for me

    'Look back at both feet and that winding knee' is the guy remembering the time he spent with the girl, and remembers her body and how she was always there behind him (look back at both feet'. Then it's the writer missing the girl, missing her skin with his. The girl 'clicked her heels' when they met, suggesting that he came into her life right when she needed him, and she's wishing for him now when he's away from her.

    Through playful lips made of yarn
    That fragile Capricorn
    Unraveled words like moths upon old scarves

    The guy is remembering when the relationship started to go wrong between him and the girl. Capricorn means the starting of the colder seasons, so when the summer ended, so did their love start to fade. Then it suggests that the starting of the winter months unravelled the love the girl and the boy shared, maybe unravelling meanings in old words they'd said. 'Playful lips made of yarn' means that perhaps there was warning behind the 'playful lips' that they weren't sure they could trust, like the warning was fabricated ('made of yarn').

    I know the world's a broken bone
    But melt your headaches, call it home

    These lyrics are pretty simple to get. The writer is saying that although the world is broken and messed up, you have to forget about it and 'call it home'.

    Drawn to the ones who never yawn

    The first lyrics have the same meaning as before. The lyric 'you are at the top of my lungs' means that although the guy has been separated from the girl for some time, hers is still the only name he wants to call or say or talk about. 'Drawn to the ones who never yawn' is referring to the first lyrics, saying that he won't want to wake up from this dream. He's dreaming of her, the one who will never want to wake up from him either - they are the 'ones who never yawn'.

    I belive this song is about a very good dream about a love someone does not want to wake up from. 'Hey moon forget to fall down' is a good exaple. If the night never ends they never have to wake up.

    I think this song is telling a story.
    I think if you look at this song in whole it is saying that maybe the greed got the best of him and it cost him the love of his life and he wishes he could change it or stay in a state that he is unaware of reality. He seemed to disappoint her. He tried to get her back but failed and he regrets the things he said. He often thinks about her and it is sad because he misses her and still loves her. She will always be his number one, the love of his life

    i think this is a statement sayin if only we could play our life out like we want it to be, like a "dream." almost as if to say if we could make the world good and right this is wat we should think about and change...

    the first line in this part is saying take greed for instance, it almost rules the world because everyone is greedy. Then they continue in the rest of this part saying well money isn't all that great, and he thinks that there are things so much better then gold and the finer things, that's he wishes he could have. So we should get rid of material goods because they eventually only cause pain and harm.

    and now he's talking about how girls have lost faith in guyz, but he seems to be reminiscing about one specific girl he seemed to have feelings for some how. and I think genius means that anything spectacular or perfect or everything you ever wanted, well she's saying that it basically don't exist, or comes rarely or only in fairy tales. when she thinks about it, it makes her cry, loose focus, go crazy, be depressed, ect.., northern downpour sends its love basically means that he feels for her and understands how she feels and would do anything to change her view or bring back some of her hope that is apparently all lost.

    this goes back to the first line basically it's saying how he wishes he could sleep forever, and not have to wake up to this cruel world. day time is so hectic and a drag and he just wants to stay in this night forever, and jus dream of how the world should be, and he wishes he could make the world perfect

    this part is kind of talking about lost love that probably shouldnt have died but he finally got the courage and realized that she was the one so he is trying to tell her how he feels and its like a rush because he just realized it. while doing this he's looking back on all the great times they had together, and how much he missed her and how much he knows she wants him back.

    this is kind of talking about how he may have said some things he may not of ment at the time but he wasnt thinking, capricorn is saying it was very cold of him because capricorn is a winter sign and it is the start of something, but maybe she did something to make him so mad, and he's fargile because someone else had already broken his heart and he don't want to get hurt again.

    this is basically simple, he's saying he understands that the world is cold and cruel and bad things happen, but there is nothing we can do about it, so just relax.

    i think this is saying how he will think of the sweetness of her and his life and the good time he has had but then it leads to thoughts of the one he lost and how alone he is and the mood changes suddenly

    again he is saying he wished he could make everything right and change the bad or at least stay in a state of dementia.

    he's saying that this song is all about her, and that it will never get old, he will always want to be with her no matter what, and he will always miss her, and always want to be with her

    I agree with ValentynBrightside, but there's one more thing I want to add.

    When it says:
    "You clicked your heels & wished for me"

    I think it references to Wizard of Oz, how Dorothy clicks her heels to go home. Many people say that "home is where the heart is" so if she wishes for him, it means that her heart is with him.

    I've loved this song since I first heard it. It's my favorite. I think this song is about dreaming of your girlfriend/significant other while you're far away, and not wanting the dream to end because you've realized you took them for granted before, but seeing them again, even in a dream, makes you realize that you should be grateful to have everything and everyone you do. "I know the world's a broken bone, but melt your headaches, call it home" suggests, to me, that everyone is lucky to be part of the world, and that if you focus on that, the world is a better, brighter place.

    just an observation to consider - "drawn to the ones who never yawn" appears to be a reference to kerouac's 'on the road'....from the oft quoted selection: "...because the only people for me are the mad ones, the ones who are mad to live, mad to talk, mad to be saved, desirous of everything at the same time, the ones who never yawn or say a commonplace thing, but burn, burn, burn like fabulous yellow roman candles exploding like spiders across the stars and in the middle you see the blue centerlight pop and everybody goes 'Awww!' "
