Well the joke is on Paul Stookey. It's a great song and if you don't "dig" rock & roll, then you just don't like music.

Paul Stookey definitely did NOT dig rock and roll music, and he was making fun of the genre when he wrote the words to this song.
He reserves most of his venom for a pair of acts that started out in folk music but branched out and became successful in pop music: Donovan and the Mamas & the Papas.
John Phillips, the leader of the Mamas & the Papas, was once part of the same Greenwhich Village folk scene that Peter, Paul & Mary emerged from. And Donovan started out as a very serious folk balladeer, who wanted to be "the Scottish Dylan." Stookey regarded both acts as sell-outs.
He also mocked the Beatles, whom he regarded as phonies. He thought the Beatles were all about making money, and he laughed when they started singing about peace, love and idealism.
